Many historic temples up here, along with newer ones as well, but it is the landscape, with majestic trees and open vistas, that make this a very special place, one that feels a lot less crowded than most of the world heritage sites of Kyoto....More

Although Japan has a lot of temples and shrines I liked this area a lot because of the scenery. First we went to Sakamoto station and from there with the cable car to Enryakuji. At the entrance you can buy a ticket for the three...More

Unfortunately we can’t see entire the building of national treasure because it is under construction by 2026. But we could see national treasure event. There were many majestic Buddhism statues. 残念ながら、現在、根本中堂は改修工事中です。2026年まで終わらないようです。そのかわり、国宝展を見ました。国宝展は入り口すぐの建物ですので、オススメです。沢山の威厳のある仏像がありました。

Enjoy riding a cable car up to the mountain. The temple is beautiful and worth spending time looking around. I found some melt snow on the side of the mountain and roadside on the day I went there.

This is a great day trip from Kyoto. Three types of train travel and beautiful forested surroundings make this a different sort of temple experience. It has enough changes in elevation to make this a slightly challenging hike. The main building, which houses the 1200...More

Although front of main temple was under renovation, limited access was permitted. There's a sense of holiness on entire grounds and it's isolated, luxurious location makes it more appealing. The main avenue to Cable Car is quite charming too. Worth a side trip from Lake...More

Spending a day here can make you understand easily how some commit their lives to Zen meditation in a place like this. It is massive and absolutely beautiful. Long hikes between different parts of the complex, and a limited bus service, so if you are...More
