As far as I know this is the only way to get up to the temple. The ride is smooth and doesn't take too long. I can tend to be a bit claustrophobic and afraid of heights but it didn't happen so that was a...More
The Shoshazan ropeway is in Himeji, Hyogo prefecture. Accessible from JR Himeji station by bus , route no.8, costs 270 yen and takes about 30 minutes. Buses depart every 15 minutes or so.
The ropeway station is close by the bus stop and a return...More
I took this ropeway when winter last February. I bought the ticket at the counter near Himeji Station, return ticket for bus and ropeway (package).
The weather is cold, not so many tourists. I met only 3 other tourists in the ropeway while going up....More
You can buy a combination ticket for cash only for the bus and rope way from the bus information centre near to where the buses depart from outside the station on the castle side. Ask at the tourist information centre at the station.
The most convenient way up to Shoshazan Engyoji, the ride provides for a pretty view of the city and the surrounding mountains. Helps that I was there in late autumn, and the foliage was in amazing hues.
At the end station of bus number 8 you take the Shoshazan ropeway to get you partly up to the summit of the mountain. The trip up is very pleasant since Mt. Shosha is not yet really discovered by huge groups of tourists. At the...More
It's a 5 minute ropeway, but what made it fun is that once it started going everyone got happy and started chatting. The scenery is truly beautiful as well. I enjoyed this form of transit after taking buses and planes.

You are correct. You buy ticket at the station and must walk to the castle .after seeing castle go to the bus stop at the T intersection in front of the castle and catch the correct bus to the ropeway. You cannot get off the bus and then get back on in the same direction. catch the bus back to the station all the way to the station.
Hope this helps.

We did the same day-trip plan for kyoto-himeji-shoshazan. Your planned time of 0730 to 1900 should be sufficient as long as you keep realistic visit duration for Himeji Castle because the last ropeway from Shoshazan to Himeji bus station is about 5 pm. Do check on Japan Sightseeing Guide for more details.
Shoshazan Engyoji temple is reachable by combination of bus ride (from Himeji station, 28 minutes) and ropeway (5 minutes). A combination return ticket of 1300 yen is available at the bus station at Himeji station.
From the entrance of the temple complex, visitors have 2 choices to tour this complex, ie. hiking or taking Microbus to Maniden Temple (it means 33 Places) which cost 1000 yen. By hiking, visitors will take the Saigoku Pilgrimage Road where Niomon Gate can be viewed and many artifacts are displayed along the path.
It is a huge place and hiking through most of the areas can take a long time. So, a good mix of Microbus first and then hiking can save some energy and time.
Have a great tour.
