The Al Ain Palace really shows the transformation of the country from its years pre and post petroleum. The palace of the Royal family has now been preserved so the we have a glimpse into that world before the oil money flowed in and changed the country.
The way the family lived was comfortable and adaptable to the weather but nothing like we see today. It is a respectful way to understand the country’s past and how it will now grow to the future.
Having seen both homes you can see how the country has changed.

The palace itself is beautiful and well maintained. It’s a very inviting place and the staff are welcoming. As a visitor, much more explicit information in the form of stories, videos, descriptions of objects, a time line of evens and personalization of the palace would really help make the experience more valuable. I came away with more questions than answers.

1. Palace area is huge and next to Al Ain Oasis (though the entrance from oasis side is closed).
2. There are several stratus of small buildings around the courtyard. All nicely maintained without dust or molds.
3. No, there is no Royal exhibit which is a bit disappointing for kids.
4. The photographs of the Sheikhs are the only exhibit and few old beds and Diwaniya furnitures.
5. The place has a serene and quiet feeling. 30 mins away from the scotching Sun shine.
6. Entry is free

The Palace is very pristine and well looked after. A useful insight into “family” Life many decades ago.
We were missing any sort of commentary or map. It’s possible COVID has meant they are not possible, but I’m sure there were lots of interesting facts we missed!

The best time for a visit to Al Ain, to the Emirates is from fall to spring, from October to March, because the climate in summer is terribly hot (and humid).
I visited Al Ain several times in all seasons, because I worked and lived from 2009 to 2012 inmid of the Rub Al Khali desert. I bought a lexus convertible car and I travelled about 135.000 (!!) km all over the UAE.
I liked the area of Al Ain, because the climate around Al Ain is much better than the climate in Abu Dhabi City and in Dubai City. That's the reason why many very wealthy Eimratis have a second house in Al Ain. When you drive through Al Ain you may see many very expensive Emiratis villas from the top 1% of the Emirati upper upper class.
I especially recommend you to visit this Sheikh Zayed Palace museum. Sheikh Zayed was the founder of the UAE; and you get a phantstaic view into the history of the Emirates.

Thinking this was a museum to honor Sheikh Zayed (the father of the UAE) and his family, we were expecting more than just a few empty rooms with no information. The place was completely empty, we only saw one employee sweeping. No one there to explain the museum or to show you around. The entrance is free, you won't be missing much if you don't get to see this.

If you expect diamond chandelliers and golden bath tube, you will be very disappointed. The palace actually shows surprisingly how humble the Sheiks used to live! A nice trip back into the past but not a place you have to have on your bucket list
