Rather large statue commemorating the founder of Chiang Rai. Loved the different animals at the base. Wish I'd read these reviews first as I'd have loved the free tour!

This memorial statue is of King Mengrai who founded Chiang Rai and subsequently Chiang Mai. I would say yes, at least to history buffs, take a moment to check it out.

Passed the monument in the daytime, but in the evening lit up looks great. A 15 minute visit is enough for a couple of photos. Thais go to pay respect o the old king.

We enjoyed looking over the monument. It was interesting to see how he is still venerated and offerings left for luck. It is near where the night markets are located so is easy to access.

I really enjoyed visiting this monument. I actually came here with my partner who had a Thai relative who took us to all of these quirky places that weren’t as high on the recommendations. Even though this is extremely high on my list, I am...More
