This is the church I attend, and its my second home.
I go there with all my troubles, pain and with my whole life.

Visited in morning before going to cricket. We were the only visitors. Cathedral church was impressive. So peaceful compared to the centre of Galle, 5 minutes walk away. Unusual to see windows without glass. Well worth the walk up the hill.

In the summer of 2018 we (Dutch familie of 4, kids 13 and 18) travelled to discover the beauties of Sri Lanka.
It must have been the temperature, but climbing up to the church was quite an effort. Arriving at the church it was not very interesting, even the Lourdes-grotto on the right was a little bit dull.
On the way down we spotted a lizard...

We saw this beautiful church while walking on the ramparts of Galle Fort and felt it was worth a visit. It's a long way from the fort on foot so you'll need a car or to take a tuk tuk.
Lovely location on a height, St Mary's towers over Galle. The facade is very striking with twin bell towers. Inside is surprisingly simple with soft yellow walls, some nicecstaiined glass windows and an old organ with loads of character. Well worth a visit if you have the wheels to get you there.

The only information I got about this church was that is was built in the late 19th century. But a plaque on top of the church states 1874 which I assume is when it was completed. My longtime Galle-resident friend Nasser Hussain took me to visit this this church and said that it once commanded expansive views over Galle and the surrounding seas. I was so disappointed that those views have disappeared almost completely thanks to some ugly buildings that have been constructed in the close vicinity. What a shame!

Our guide/driver took us in to view the colourful glass (some of it original), the inscriptions and the features.
I loved the old pump-organ. It died years ago and is in need of repair. There is another organ too.
Some of the inscriptions were rather sad ---of course!
A charming place; a portal to the past....

This is a beautiful and imposing place of worship - the main centre of Roman Catholicism in Galle - being the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Galle. Built at the end of the 19th century it is dedicated to the blessed Virgin Mary. It is designed in Baroque revival style and stands out so well when seen from afar and is most definitely worth visiting at close quarters to gain an impression of the history and heritage associated with the Catholic faith in Southern Sri Lanka.

Majestically perched above a hill overlooking the Fort, Saint Mary's Church stands proud as perhaps the only Catholic edifice in Galle. The church is beautiful but the one I got really interested with is the very modernist, almost brutalist structure attached to the church on its right side which is very reminiscent of Les Corbusier. It's the Bishop's Palace and it us a very striking piece of architecture juxtaposed within the rich historical silhouettes of the old church.

Finding something like this on Galle is very surprising and highly recommended to design or architecture geeks and enthusiasts.
