A fantastic traditional local business, great products and very educational.
Fantastic experience, to be able to see the hand weaving process happening and knowing it supports so many local women. The products they make are great. High quality and unique. Clothing, cushion covers, towels, table runners, picnic rugs, and more. Great for your own use and as gifts, and very reasonably priced.

    very impressive to see
During our tour through Sri Lanka, we visited this authentic weaving mill. Here the craft of weaving is still practiced in the old-fashioned way, so without electricity. Very beautiful and even impressive to see how this happens. A family business and we were shown around by one of the owners, Chandana Sooriyaarachchi beautiful to see how everything is woven and then make beautiful sarees and sarongs of very nice fine quality. Very worthwhile to visit.

    Beautiful and informative visit!
We had a beautiful tour of this weaving place with the owner - he was really generous with his knowledge and time as there was no cost to the tour. All the women working there were beautiful - so much incredible craftsmanship and amazing to see all the stages in process. I’ve been looking to visit a handloom place in the whole of Sri Lanka, so was stoked to have found this place. Beautiful pieces to also purchase!

A Must-Visit for Fabric Fanatics & Culture Buffs
From the moment I stepped into Sooriya Weaving Mills, I was captivated. The friendly staff welcomed me with a smile and embarked on a fascinating tour, demystifying the handloom process from raw yarn to vibrant masterpiece. Each step – the intricate weaving, the natural dyeing, the sun-drenched drying – was a testament to time-honored craftsmanship. But the true magic lies in the finished pieces. The handloom sarongs, tablecloths, and kimonos are simply breathtaking. If you're looking for authentic, exquisite textiles and an unforgettable cultural experience, Sooriya Weaving Mills is a must-visit. 5 stars, hands down!
Thx a lot for your honest review, it’s really encouraging us .

    Beautiful visit !
If you are in Galle or Unawatuna, this place is definitely worth a visit. Only 5-10 minutes away from the busy beaches. Step into a piece of Sri Lankan history at one of the country's last remaining hand loom factories. There story began in 1976 with the visionary co-founders, Mr. & Miss Sooriyaarachchi. Inspired by the Sinhalese term 'Sooriya,' meaning 'Sun,' they set out to breathe new life into the traditional handloom industry. Just as the sun provides energy to the world. A visit to the factory promises an enriching experience, where you can witness firsthand the intricate artistry and craftsmanship that defines Sri Lankan handloom weaving. A big thank you to Chandana for showing us around the grounds and the whole factory, taking his time to explain everything in detail. You will definitely enjoy it and not forget your visit.
Thanks a lot for your wonderful review, it’s really encouraging me and my team , appreciated your feedback 🙏

    Great workshop
This is such an interesting place, one of the three in Sri Lanka where they still weave with natural fibres dyed by themselves. I also took a three hours workshop guided by one of the weavers to learn how to use the handloom and it was amazing! The owner speaks great English and he explained to us all the phases of the production and the history of the place. You can also shop the beautiful creations they make here if you want (without being pushed to do so at all). The visit is free and the workshop I took was 8000lkr (circa 20€).

A must visit if you are in the Galle area
What a place. Thank you Chandana for showing us around. Really informative to see the whole process from washing and dying cotton to finished garments and wonderful that you are working to support women in your local community. Your shop on site is like an Aladdin’s cave…. So happy with my shopping!

A rare gem of arts and crafts.
A truly unique place that keeps a beautiful craft of hand loom weaving fabrics alive. Got to to know the owner. His parents founded the business. He mannaged to fuse this timeless craft with contemporary design. He collaborates with fashion designers that look for unique and sustainable production methods. It's amasing that they not only kept this place alive, but thriving. Me and my wife are developing our fashion / home accessories brand. We didn't plan to do business in Shrilanka, but when we saw what these people do, we had to order a batch for ourselves. Rare places like this should be supported by government because they are not mere tourist attractions, but true gems that should be protected and cherished.

I had a priviledge to visit the Sooriya weaving mill one afternoon - Chandana gave us a tour and explained to us the whole process - how they use virgin raw yarns, weave them the traditional way, manually dying and drying the yarn hanks with natural air. Chandana spent 15 years in corporate in Colombo before going home to help his mom and ensuring the empowerement of women.
I did it during a rainy afternoon and it was just perfect - then visited the nearby Gall.

I am so glad that I had a chance of visiting Sooriya Weaving Mills that brings 100% traditional Cotton Handloom to the nation located in Galle. The Proprietor is an awesome gentleman who works with dedication and commitment in making this industry more specifically the Mill a sustainable business. One can experience the entire process of making a yarn to variety of products including fabric garments, Soft toys, products for hotels ad villas and more specifically Sarees. One should never miss the opportunity of visiting Sooroya Weaving when you visit Galle. And I guarantee the products I bought from there are genuinely traditional and please support his course of giving more opportunities to local workers in producing fantastic handlooms

Sooriya Weaving was shown to us by our coutious tok tok driver. It appears, because they are not on the 'main road' many of the tours do not call in.

At the factory the whole process from raw cotton to finished product can be seen.

The current owner has taken over the business from his parents and continues to employ people from the local area.

There are opportunities to buy the finished quality products.

It is well worth the visit and you will be impressed with the range of products available for purchase

Our family of five just spent a couple of hours at this place for two main reasons: To teach our children something about the the traditional art of cotton dying and weaving, and to support the existing pockets of local handcraft in the area. The owner took us on an insightful tour through his small factory. He employs about 40 local women with a lot of experience in the art of weaving. The allowed our children (teenagers) to take their seats a few times, so that they could get their own hands-on feeling as to how much effort, skill and art goes into weaving one of these colorful Sri Lankan cotton fabrics - especially if they are done in such a unique way as at Sooriya Weaving.
