A fairly large market area taking up most of Main St between 1st Cross St to Dickson St and with lots of choices. From food, fish, vegetables, fruit, meat, clothes, shoes , trinkets & other tourist staples you'll find them here ! No real hard sell & very little bargaining, the price is the price, was the majority of dealers. Still some bargains to be had & a good way to wander the streets and enjoy the area.

If you can cope with the heat, pollution, tuk tuk, traders then this place is worth a quick visit. In particular the fruit market - wish we had something like this near where we live. Also the traders were genuinely decent folk who were happy to take the time to explain their wares

actually, i don't know where is the exactly location of it. i take along the side side & walk escape the old fort. reach local fish market first. that is full of local people & fish. not bad. and then, take more 1x min, reach busy place with many stuffs & local people again also busy road. finally, found the old structure with yellow roof. that was selling many fruits. i think that is dutch market. don't know finally. just take a look & ate a breakfast & juicy in local stall. done

This market is located in the main street next to the Bodhi temple
GPS N06 02.123 E060 13.199

It is a long covered market selling fresh fruit & veg.
The produce is very colourful and well displayed and makes for great photo opportunities.
It has the name "Green Market 1880" on the front Gable ends, but other info i was given said it is 300 years old.
That aside it is worth a quick look as you travel down Main St.

TOP TIP: Check the inscriptions on some of the massive wooden beams.

If you are out and about in the area the locals will point you in the direction of this local market, worth a look if passing but mainly just fruit and vegetables and fish. Nice to see all the local fresh produce at such low prices so if you wish to buy here is a great place to do so. Many different varieties to what we get back home including red bananas and rambutans. Fish stalls can be a little overpowering with the aroma and a lot of dried fish.

If vegetable and fruit markets are your thing, Dutch Market is a classic in abundance of tasty, colorful fruits. This market provides countless photo opportunities parlayed with a good healthy, reasonable lunch. The Dutch Market is a hub for Galle activity. To the west is the train station and catholic church farther up the hill, To the east the fish market on the shoreside is worth checking put. Of course to the south is classic Galle Fort and the contrast it all by trucking north into Newtown. There are bargains to be found.

The main attraction is the old styled tiled building housing this market. This is an all in all market, where you get vegetables, meats and fruits all together. The main product is the salted fish which is available in plenty and you can see big salted fish hanging, which is something different than back home. The best part of this market is that it is well maintained and clean.

Come here only if you want to buy fruit. Prices quoted could be for tourist. Make sure you negotiate each type before telling them your quantity. Otherwise they cut the banana and demand a high price that you cannot refuse as it has been cut from stem and cannot be sold to someone else.

This is disappointing considering the hype! Ministry of crab saved us from a complete washout! Great restaurant!
