While on a pilgrimage our bus stopped for a few minutes to view Mount Temptation and take a few pictures. We did not ride to the Monastery, which is unfortunate. Nonetheless, we were able to grab a few photos of the mountain and buildings from below. This is landscape photography, so it would be best with a DSRL, good sharp lens, stopped down to its max sharpness f-stop like f/8 or f/11, low ISO, and adjusted white balance for lighting. We had a pocket camera since the pilgrimage mode of travel made it difficult to carry much each day.

In line with its name this is on top of a mountain. Whilst there is an enjoyable cable car ride to get to the initial phase there are a lot of steep steps to get you to top (ie what you came to see).
Some of the views of Jericho below are excellent and this is a destination place if you are in the City.
Be warned though this may be a challenge for people who don’t like heights but perhaps more so it’s a challenge in fitness

The Mount of Temptation is the place where the Devil is supposed to have taken Jesus to tempt and lure Him into obeisance to Satan. A more desolate and barren spot would be hard to find anywhere in the world. Viewed from below on the flat land surrounding the mountain, one can - with difficulty - locate the ancient Monastery clinging to the steep side of the Mountain, blending in with the drab colored rock. A single resort is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. The resort and/or the Monastery are accessible via a cable car from the ground below the mountain. From the viewpoint, no foliage or greenery of any kind is visible anywhere on the drab tan slopes. The nearest greenery and foliage is located well below the base of the mountain.
A good place to stop and view from below, but you probably won't want to spend too long looking.

Worth a visit. Monastery is fairly unique with its location, but not a lot to see. The bible story makes it interesting though. Nice cable car ride and good views over Jericho new & old below, together with the Jordan valley. There are some steps to the monastery from the cable car, but nothing really challenging for most levels of fitness. Also a cafe at the top.

It's something to read about Jesus having been "led into the wilderness", to be tempted by the devil.....and this is the place!!!! One could sit and meditate for hours regarding what is recorded of these events, and yet I kept coming back to the reality that "this is the place"!!!! I could envision the temptations of the devil to the Lord on the side of that inaccessible cliff, and each time was overwhelmed by the words that "this is the place". I sat atop the ruins of the fallen walls of Jericho, looked at the distance to the Jordan River, considered the Arc of the Covenant being carried into the promised land by the Israelites, kept looking at the areas the people must have gathered, walked around the walls, looked at the places Jesus was tempted, beginning to understand the meaning of "the wilderness", all the while beginning to grasp the magnitude that "this is the place". Neither the inhabitants of Jericho, nor the Greek Orthodox church built upon the place where Jesus was tempted by the devil, but I kept being overwhelmed by the reality that "this is the place" where the events actually took place.

The guy in charge here locked my friends and I in his monastery and threatened to call the pólice on us. Why? Because one person in our group took a photo of me holding up the peace sign. Apparently this has a doublé meaning here in Israel and the West Bank, so we deleted the photo out of desire to show respect. The man in charge insisted that he see our cameras in order to verify that we followed hs orders. We showed him the camera several times to prove that we did not have any pictures of us holding up the peace sign within the monastery, but he continued to yell and act as if the world had ended. He finally let us out after much hassle. He did not speak Arabic, Hebrew, or English. So there was no way for anyone in the group to have a meaningful conversation with him. There was nothing we did to deserve this kind of treatment other than being tourists who were ignorant of all the cultural customs in this región. In fact, even though my background is Christian, and people often hear about the religious fighting between different religious groups (i.e. Muslims and Jews), rather then within them, I must say I have never been treated this way by a Muslim or Jew in all my life. Good example of the kind and compassionate way Jesús would have acted: not. The man who runs this monastery is an absolute thug. Visit it at your own risk.

The Mount of Temptation, traditionally known as the place where Jesus was tempted by the devil during his 40 day fast.
My beautiful Israeli Palestinian tour guide and I went to Jericho to visit all the sites possible. The Mount of Temptation was the main attraction. We went up via cable car, which you have to pay. You also can walk up and I don't know if there is a charge.
Riding on the cable car gave us a beautiful view of Jericho, the Monastery, caves in the mountain and far off the Dead Sea and Jordan. It was fun and a little scary when they stopped at one point, in the middle of the ride, but I think it was because it was both steeper up and down and maybe change gears or something. It is fully automatic.
The Monastery is built into the rock face. When you arrive, there are restaurants and souvenir shops. I bought a bedouin's headscarf that was made in Hebron, very good material, heavy cotton. from a steps seller. Bargained. And the seller wrapped it on my head in the bedouin fashion. You walk down a number of steps, then up 139 steps to the Monastery. The walk up has many beautiful views and turns, so it's not really steep, just continuous. There are many caves in the mountain face. Arriving at the monastery, there is a narrow walkway with rooms on the left side and caves on the right. The caves, Im not sure who stayed in them. I am going to assume some holy people. The Greek Orthodox Monk came down and opened the cave gate and inside were pix of Jesus and Mother Mary, amongst other things. There was also a deeper grotto below. Both felt very sacred. The monk invited us to go into the Church itself. Very very Beautiful inside. Many paintings of saints, Jesus, Mary, ornate furnishings, alter. The monk and myself had a very interesting talk about how the dome of the church has a picture of "god with the dove" painted in it, when no one paints pictures of god, anywhere, really. Jesus is on the cross below it. Very very interesting explanation and very informative and friendly monk. English speaking. We had a time restraint, so we had to end of conversation, too bad. There is a little open area where there is a rock behind a glass enclosure, supposedly marking the spot where Jesus stayed on the mountain. Very reveered spot. But no one really knows exactly all the places Jesus stayed. This must be one of them. The walk back to the cable car was easier as it was mostly downhill until the last part, which was, again uphill to the cable car. This is a definite place to see.

You might be temped to take the cable cars, but let's face it, Jesus didn't have that amenity. If you want a full experience, hike up and enjoy the amazing view and architecture :) takes about 15-20 min.

So, we took the cable car to the top. But that's just the beginning … get ready to climb and climb and climb to reach the Monastery. It's truly amazing! If you can make it to the top, do it. The monastery is rooms and chapels cut directly into the rock. When you reach the top chapel - climb the last staircase and there it is -- the rock upon which Jesus sat as he was tempted by the Devil. Of course it is enclosed in glass under an altar. Turn around and walk out on the balcony and see the most amazing view of Jericho very far below you. Exhausting, breathtaking, inspiring and holy. It was amazing! Go for it!

This site was the highlight of the trip for my mom, and one of the highlights for me. While other Jesus sites like Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Church of the Nativity are so overrun with tourists you can hardly breathe, let alone have a moment of rapture, Church of the Temptation is so far off the beaten path (hence why Jesus Man went there) that it's very isolated. I'm not a particularly religious person... but I'll be damned if I didn't feel something there. And the views of Jericho are amazing to boot.

Is it a long climb up to the monastery from the cable car
Written 24 October 2017
Kathy nailed it...the walk is reasonably steep but manageable. You can stop along the way as the view is breathtaking (pardon the pun...).

Gracias
Written 11 March 2017
It's not quite cheap. Approximately $ 20 per person. To be sure - ask directly at the cable car. you will find the homepage under jericho-cablecar. Do not expect a big cable car. It's really more fun. Adi
