    Cuidad Perdida - Expotur
A challenging but amazing experience, we booked through Expotur, who made the whole trip very enjoyable and easy, they sorted us into a group of 13, provided all of the accomodation, meals, a tour guide (Elizabeth), a translator (Luis) and a chef (Luz). All of the Expotur staff were incredibly helpful and professional, and taught us a lot about the history of the lost city and of Tayrona. The accomodation was fine, large dorms of bunk beds, you don’t spend much time there so they don’t need to be anything special. The food was great, and they catered for all food preferences. The views throughout the hike, and especially at cuidad perdida are the best I have ever seen, which made the whole trip worthwhile. The hiking itself is challenging and at times can be difficult, but overall is okay, the guides are very good at stopping where necessary for breaks, and also picking up the pace if needs be. We found the biggest challenge with this trip is the jungle environment, it can be incredibly hot during the day, as well as being very humid through the day and night, this can make it quite uncomfortable with clothes not drying overnight (we were caught in a tropical thunderstorm on day 3, and our clothes remained very wet for the rest of the trip). It is very important to pack light, but to also make sure you have a change of clothes for each day, or at least a change of pants and socks. There are also an immense amount of mosquitos, so make sure to take plenty of insect repellant - we were advised to take Nopikex, however found it wasn’t as good as Jungle Formula. Overall an incredible trip, but very challenging.

    Outstanding service and trek
This was one of the best experiences of our lives. Of course, the scenery, and history of the region had a part to play in this, but the service provided by Expotur really augmented everything. Our guide, Camacho, was clearly an expert on the region and local customs, a really engaging storyteller, and made us feel safe and motivated the whole way. Our translator, Pilar, was incredible, translating everything with enthusiasm and energy, and made sure we never missed a photo opportunity! Food cooked by Emiro was delicious and hearty, and kept us going through the long days. We would recommend this experience to anyone with a sense of adventure. We felt very well looked after. Thank you Expotur!!

    Best trek in South America
The trip was greatly organised and the staff were amazing! We weren't very fit but they motivated us till the end! Camacho was the best guide ever, always ready to answer every single question we had :) Pilar was the translator but also our greatest asset when we were struggling behind during the toughest uphills! I won't forget about this experience also thanks to the great food waiting for us at the end of the day; we gotta thank Emiro for that, he even cooked pasta once and I've got to say it wasn't bad at all for being in the jungle :P

    Expotur is amazing
An incredible experience. Expotur goes above and beyond with information and the indigenous people, history and habitat of the jungle. This trek is not to be taken lightly especially during rainy season when the trail can be slick. It's best to go early in the morning before afternoon rains so get up when they tell you too. The plus side is there are a lot Less people in the jungle trekking to the Lost City.

    Obstacle walking
It's challenging, tiring, dirty and painful. But it is an adventure of high knowledge. You need a lot of stamina and enjoy walking in extreme environments. I went with very comfortable trekking boots, I didn't have any significant discomfort, but after the trip, I lost two toenails and I'm waiting for the other one, which turned completely purple, to fall off too. But overall I enjoyed it, I had fun at times. There's not much fun, it's more the adventure of walking all day with lots of obstacles. The staff is amazing, they are kind and patient. They take care of us as if we were family.

Very impress with the tour, guides and organization.
Tour was extremely well organized. They picked us up at our hostel, stored bags and arranged for transport wherever we needed to go afterwards. There was plenty of food along the way. I personally got sick from the camp water but everyone else in my group was OK. I switched to bottled water for 10k per L which was pricier but worth it to not be sick. Once I started feeling sick my guide gave me a mix of bottled water, lemon and sodium bicarbonate at lunch and I felt much better for the rest of the trek. It is very hot and you will get very sweaty so have alternate hiking cloths as they will not dry out fully overnight on the line. Our guides were very patient, good translators and good company. We used Expotur with guide Cesar Jr and translator Heberth. Cesar has been working with Expotur for 15 years (since he was 14 years old)! It is great to see companies hire local and keep work in their communities. Heberth was an excellent translator and very funny. He is also a local to the area and very passionate about his community.
Hi 👋👋, thank you for sharing your experience with us! At Expotur, we pride ourselves on offering well-organized tours and are pleased to know that we were able to provide you with a complete service, from pick-up at your hostel to transportation and care during the tour. We are sorry to hear that you got sick from the camp water, but we appreciate your advice about using bottled water as a precaution. We are glad our guide was able to provide you with an effective solution to make you feel better. We are delighted that you enjoyed the company and professionalism of our team, thank you for choosing us and we hope to see you again on future adventures with Expotur! 😁💚✨

    Lost City with Expotur
I was an amazing and really impressing tour through the jungle. Our guides from Expotur were the best Levi, Aldair, Brayan and of course our coon Jesus did a great job to keeping us happy and telling us the stories about the Lost City and the neighbourhood. I'd do it again!

    Expotour trek
We had an amazing trek with Expotour. Our guide was Iderle assisted by Jhon, our chef was Jesus and our translator was Aldair. All of the team were really welcoming and reassuring. It was a challenging walk, made easier by them keeping us well fed and in high spirits. They explained clearly exactly what the plan was and made sure no one was left behind. Ida gave us really interesting talks about the history of the area and the lost city - for us non Spanish speakers having Aldair there was excellent. I would strongly recommend this company for the tour!!

We completed the 5 day Ciudad Perdida Trek with our family of four, including two children age 5 and 9 years old. The service from Expotur was excellent, starting with the transport from and to the hotel, but also the communication before the trek. Our group of four had three dedicated guides: Jorge, the main guide, Samuel, the translator, and Cunga, the chef. The guides made our trip a great success. Delicious hot food three times per day, showing us the most beautiful places in the jungle, sharing a wealth of information about nature and culture, but above all, carrying our youngest child for miles across difficult terrain. The trek is very challenging, but our 9 year old daughter walked the full 57km distance (5500m total climb) and our 5 year old really enjoyed the adventure thanks to the loving care of our guides. The camps were great. There is WiFi everywhere for a small fee. The camp showers are cold but that is fine if you shower immediately when arriving at a camp hot and sweaty. Every camp has a shop where you can buy cold water bottles and beer. During the hikes, you get a break every 2km where the guides serve you fresh fruit. It makes the hikes easier to endure. The guides made the whole experience feel very luxurious. Meeting Mamo at Ciudad Perdida, the giant waterfall, the cable cart river crossings and swimming in the river are just some of the highlights of our trip.

The whole experience was a blast! Expotour was perfectly organized and we had a lot of fun with our Guide Dennis and Translator Andres! The food was really good thanks to our cook Emiro.

Overall it’s not an easy hike but with a decent condition and will it’s definitely doable. I can highly recommend the tour to everyone and also the company Expotour!

Amazing experience! The walk is great, the guides are helpful, the food was delicious and filling, the campsites were comfortable and allowed you to relax a bit after a long day of hiking. The Lost City itself is obviously breathtaking but the journey there is equally breathtaking! I think you have to be moderately fit to do this as I am an avid hiker and I still found it strenuous as times even though I went during rain-season with lower temperatures.

I had an amazing experience. One of the best things ive done in south america for sure, the natural beauty is indescribable and the experience as a whole is totally worth it.
500 seems like alot at first but once you do the hike it is worth every penny.

I want to also give a special mention to carlos and sixto. They made the whole experience great and kept us feeling comfortable. Carlos would sit with us and tell stories and he was great company.

We had an amazing time on this trip—especially thanks to the amazing and accommodating people at Expotur. We had a weather delay on our flight to Colombia, meaning we didn’t make it to Santa Marta the day before the hike as planned. But Expotur graciously picked us up at the airport the morning of the hike and even waited patiently as we filed a claim for a lost bag. The guides, translator, and cook really made this trip amazing. I love to hike—but at 42 I hike a lot slower than the younger people in our group. The guides were very accommodating, never rushed me to go faster, and even sometimes carried my backpack on the really steep hills to help me out. I’m not sure I would not have given up the first day if not for Carlos, our translator, who carried my bag up the steepest hills and chatted and joked with us to keep my spirits up. I have to give a special shout out to Luis, who walked with me at the back the most. He was always willing to help if I needed it but also gave me the space to go at my own pace and carry my backpack myself.

This hike is amazing but also definitely difficult. The hike is broken into manageable chucks with breaks for swimming or fruit and meals along the way. I felt like the difficulty of the hike went down each day. The steep up hill in the afternoon heat was killer. There is an original path that is narrow, more scenic, but steeper, and a new path, partly paved, that accommodates pack mules and motorcycles. We took the original path, but the steepness is no joke. There is also a steep uphill section on Day 2 in the afternoon, but while definitely hard, it seemed easier than the day before. The third day, you will have the steep, uneven stairs to the Lost City and some steep ups and downs. We did the 5-day itinerary, which takes you off the main trail to a couple of waterfalls on day 4 and finish hiking out on day 5. This was one of the highlights of the trip. First, both days are easier and more relaxed. Second, you are not hiking the same trails with hundreds of other people. Day 4 felt like the jungle hike I expected. It was really peaceful and beautiful.

Both Carlos, Luis, and our primary guide, Sixto, were very informative. They showed us different plants, insects, and birds, and told us about the history of the area and the cultures of the indigenous people. Sixto did a good job pacing and breaking up his Spanish-language information so that Carlos could translate. Our cook was great too. The food was always very good and good portions for hiking all day. Some of the guys were also able to get seconds most of the meals.

Bottom line: this hike is amazing but hard. Don’t underestimate the elevation change and the heat and humidity. Expotur will make sure you have the best trip possible, especially if your Spanish is limited or nonexistent.

This hike was high on my bucket list of things to do in Colombia and it didn’t disappoint! The less weight you carry, the easier your experience will be! The guides (Sixto and Luis), cook, and Translator (Carlos) were absolutely fantastic. I would highly recommend this tour company. Food was great. Camps had what we needed. According to my Fitbit, we hiked a bit further than advertised but it was all worth it! The office team was also great to work with before the trip. Very accommodating!

Feb 2024 • Friends
I just got back from a trip with a larger group (18 people) in Feb 2024. We had an absolutely epic time; it's already a treasured memory. If you're on the fence, do it!

I wanted to give a few logistical thoughts and address misconceptions I had, to help the "planners".

* There is no cap on group size; large groups just get more guides.
* Camps are communally shared between the tour operators. Think of "outdoor school", with proper kitchens, power outlets to charge phones, unheated showers and flushing toilets. There are industrial water filters at the camps; I didn't use my filter at all.
* The hike was a bit more strenuous than expected. A few people sent their backpacks ahead on mule ($10/day), smart for those that did it.
* Backpacks were left out and open. One person in our group lost a GoPro. My guess - another tourist picked it up by mistake. Visible cash was untouched, so I don't think theft was a problem.
* It's /remote/. There is no risk that Ciudad Perdida is going to hit Macchu Pichu tourism levels any time soon. We were told that tourism hasn't recovered since its 2018 pre-Covid high-water mark. I can see them cutting a day from the trip by moving base-camp from Machete to the top of the Day 1 hill, but that's about it. No tour busses for you, Ciudad Perdida!
* Camp food was basic and healthy. The general concensus was that it was very good. On the first day, someone was selling local jam at a watermelon break. I regretted not buying it for the morning pancakes [pro tip!]. All the tour operators seemed to cook similar food.
* We got perfect weather, not a drop of rain. No mosquitos, a minute of not-worth-mentioning gnats near the top, and one person got one insect bite. Maybe no rain = no bugs? Regardless, our bug spray went mostly unused.
* Pepto pills and Imodium A-D were appreciated by some. We had some pretty wild temperature swings (some of us went from an Alaskan -60 degrees to exercising in 90+ degrees), which turned stomachs.
* A last-minute swap of pasta for gluten-free rice & fish was no problem.
* On one night, camp was over capacity. Beds were distributed so 90% of every group got a bed. Two of us slept in hammocks.
* Some camps are BYO-TP. Some people have high-lumen headlamps and use the bathroom at night - consider bringing a sleep mask.
* No police at the top of the mountain.

About the tour operators:

* I went with Turcol (smaller online presence, there from the beginning, stronger indigenous connection), and we were literally high-fiving each other over how good our guides were.
* Luis (our main guide) and Indio (translator) paid a healthy attention to logistics. For example, one of the best decisions they made was to take us the "side route" to the top, which was just as amazing as the top of the city [pic], and timed our arrival at the top so we were alone. They also ran ahead to ensure we got our beds when we were going slow, never rushed us, etc. Being bigger / slower worked out great for us.
* Indio, our translator, was on a spiritual journey with the local indigenous people. He had a big smile, gave indigenous kids exploding fist-bumps and regularly checked in to make sure that we had everything we needed. Luis gave us lessons on the region and people.
* Guides from the different tour operators all know each other; one appeared to be a sibling of Asis. Shout-out to our crew: Luis, Indio, Asis, Bridgette (cook), and Eddie (assistant), all fantastic.
* Dealing with Turcol was smooth prior to arriving. Adding and removing people wasn't a problem. Email responses (reservas (at) turcol.co) sometimes took a day or two.

Thumbs up if this review helped. Good luck and have a great trip!
