Many of the shops and food vendors were blasting their music at high volume levels. It spoiled the atmosphere, so I left sooner than I otherwise would have.
Also, the vendors should show their prices. I don't want to bargain with a vendor in a language I don't speak or understand.

Excellent experience but only because we had a guided tour by a local expert. To go alone you would miss a lot of the history and significance. Some of the kiosks/stalls are expensive! They are catering for gringo tourists.

You cannot come to Medellin and not go to Comuna 13. The vibe, energy and views. This is history and the people are proud of this. Take the escalators to the top, stop along the way and browse the shops, get a bite to eat and enjoy it. Safe but avoid going in the evening and stick to the main tourist path.

Unique experience. Happiness is everywhere. Try some cheese arepas and enjoy the colorful grafiti. Go with friends, family or by yourself. Bring cash and a bottle of water. Is hot but fun

Generally in our travels around the world, we tend to avoid guided tours, mainly because you have no control over the length of your visit. We did this on a self-guided basis, all the aspects of the walk are plainly on display and we were thankful for the freedom our self guided visit gave us.
To get there you take line B to the terminus at San Javier. It was a beautiful sunny morning, so we decided to take advantage of the clear blue sky, before leaving the station we took the metro cable car to La Aurora, a fifteen minute journey soaring high over the city with spectacular views. Stayed in the car to return back to San Javier.
On leaving the station turn right and right again and all the buses (221 or 225) for the ride to Comuna 13 are there. Cost is 1700 cop but you need to have your Civica card (the card used for the Metro) charged with sufficient money. No cash is accepted.
On arrival, it is a steady ascent with shops on both sides selling the usual tourist stuff you will find elsewhere before reaching the first escalator. The three unique aspects of the area are its history which is easily researched, the graffiti displays which abound everywhere and the spectacular views over the city. Lots of street artists for you to watch and support as you see fit. Plenty of bars and a few restaurants and lots of loud competing music. From the point the bus drops you off, it takes about 30 minutes to ride the escalators and walk to the very end of the road which is flat once you reach the final escalator. How long you want to spend there is a personal decision.
On return, we opted to walk back to the metro station rather than take the bus. It gives the opportunity to see the real neighbourhood. The walk takes about 20 minutes and there is a good footpath all the way.
As a destination, it is good to support the initiative, although the loud environment might not be everyone’s ‘cup of tea’. Personally, we are pleased we made the effort to go.

The escalators make the travel through the neighborhood much more convenient. Some were not operating the day we visited so the stairs were the only option.

There are multiple escalators to take you to the top areas of Comuna 13, and they are all just built outside and into the hillside. The first part of the walk is pretty steep, but once you come to the escalators, it is obviously much easier.

Great concept to get folks moving in one of the poorer neighborhoods of Medellin.
It helps re vitalize a very dangerous area and made it commercially viable.
Great concept and it works.

At first I didn't understand the appeal of the Escaleras. But after visiting them and reaching the top of Comuna 13, I completely get it. Not only do they offer you an incredible view of Medellin, but they take you to a tourist hot spot. The top is filled with venders, shops, galleries, restaurants, and an abundance of street performers.

We did the tour of communa13 through guru walk and it was a half day tour that took us through the neighborhood and our guide gave us glimpses of Medellin’s history and violent past. It was very interesting to learn about the neighborhood and see all the murals and history behind it. The escalators are right in the middle of the neighborhood taking us to the higher levels so you can get a birds eye view. Never seen anything like that in the middle of a barrio.

Yes,I believe they are open every day. The escaleras are used by the residents to access their homes located in a hilly area. During my visit some sections were closed for repairs so I used the steps, not the escalator.
