About
Four hundred years ago jesuits established in Cartagena and founded a school and a church in downtown. During the XVII century a father called Pedro Claver dedicated all his life to the protection of the african slaves and became saint 300 hundred years later. To keep alive his legacy, jesuits came back to the city at the end of XIX century and started to collect pieces for a museum that includes precolombian, religious and african caribbean art and, of course, the chamber and other spaces where the saint lived and died. Nowadays it is the museum with the most complete collection of religious art in Colombian coast, and the building preserves the spirit of Claver, the spirit of Human Rights.

My husband and I spent nearly an hour inside this cathedral and garden. We went through a smaller side door and paid $4 each to go inside. You first walk into a lush green garden, entering the big cathedral through a side door. The ornate altar contains the skeleton of Saint Peter Claver and you can take pictures in there. There is a museum on the lower floor on the other side of the garden with religious paintings. Upstairs there are several rooms that tell about St. Peter's life and work (in English as well as Spanish) and include pictures and paintings. I found it very interesting and inspiring (and I'm not a Catholic). We noticed a small stone spiral staircase along the balcony and we carefully climbed up to a "choir" loft. Up there, we continued walking around a corner and found a large organ and a wonderful view over the balcony of the sanctuary below. I think some people probably miss this area that is tucked away a bit, but is worth finding and exploring. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of our visit to this church.

A church and monastery, now a complete museum tribute to Pedro Claver. Acclaimed as a humanitarian for assisting slaves and trying to educate and help them while at the same time convert them to Christianity. I doubt they wanted that any more than being slaves. A room of the church bishops portraits, another room of religious paintings, all just labelled blandly with a title. The church itself was pleasant and attractive and a very nice courtyard garden but really for 24,000 not that interesting.

A fantastic church and very beautiful and atmospheric square which was always busy with people street performances and vendors. Our hotel was only 5 minutes away and this was one of our favourite locations in the old city.

This old part of town, colorful, rich in history of a times of piracy, colonial pass rich in food and culture. This is a must see and a must stay if you can find a hotel within its walls.

San Pedro Claver is a beautiful Church, one of the nicest in Cartagena. It was built by Pedro, a Spanish missionary who cane to the city and ended up spending his life tending to the back slaves brought by the Spaniards to the new world.
He became known as The Slave of the Slaves and was the first to be canonised a saint in the new world.
His skeleton reposes in a glass coffin on the altar.
The church is besutiful, make sure to climb the narrow stairwell to see it from on high.
You slso get to see the room Ckaver lived and died in.
Just a bedutiful, serene place and a must see if in Cartageba in my opinion.

Mass was happening so I didn't go up to see the body parts in front of the pulpit area in the tomb. Guess that's what makes the place unique. It is well located and has an important history which I read about on my own so I didn't need to be "guided". Not the most impressive in Cartagena but convenient.

Lovely monument to a human rights advocarte several centuries before his time. Few prominent Catholic leaders have my respect, but he was one of the good ones for sure. Why it took until less than 35 years ago for him to be canonized is an interesting question likely with racial overtones.

The structure and architecture is really nice. So sad that it is surrounded by garbage and everything smells of pee.
