We took a taxi from our hotel by the airport to the dock area for boarding the river vessel which takes you to the island. Although the river cruise terminal building was busy it was quite easy to buy tickets for the sail over to...More
Gulangyu is a must go to place in Xiamen. It is only accessible by ferry and it is advisable to pre-book ferry tickets as there is a quota per day for the amount of visitors allowed. The crowd is really insane but this is to...More
I love Xiamen and I love Gulangyu Island. What a cool place to just walk around and enjoy the ambience. You feel like you are walking around Hawaii, or perhaps Florida. Beautiful gardens, trees and foliage everywhere. Wonderful old buildings and nice places to eat....More
Gulangyu is a charming little island about half an hour ferry ride from Xiamen mainland - i talk about getting there at the end of this review. I can't say that it's spectacular or anything but still a nice little getaway from cars and mopeds....More
First as a foreigner you have to get to the international ferry terminal Dongdu cruise terminal which can be reached by bus 51, leaves close from the local ferry terminal. This separation is what I don‘t understand?
Anyway, ticket price for the ferry round trip...More

If you go to visit Xiamen, you definitely shall go to the Gulangyu Island, but be careful!!!
In previous years it was super easy to use the ferry to pay an visit to Gulongyu Island, but everything changed 1 or 2 years ago.
There is not many attractions in Xiamen. Therefore, spending a day-trip on Gulangyu Island is a must if you are travelling to Xiamen. Remember to get on the island by 10:00 in the morning to avoid the crowd.
Admission fees are required for all attractions/museums,...More
I only can suggest to go early as possible to get the tickets at the counter.
I never tried to make an reservation in advanced, but I guess it’s possible by CTRIP but it might be only in chinese language available.

First, my advice is never go on the weekends, any season. I have family in Xiamen and went with them the first time on a weekend and I backed out (to everyone's relief) when I saw the queue. Family were obviously there for me. I tried again by myself on a Monday and booked one night stay for Tuesday. Second, there are many windows and foreigners must go to the allocated windows because it is a higher fare (even Chinese citizens who do not have a Xiamen ID pay a higher fare), however it is not immediately obvious which one is for foreigner so find a security person, show them your passport and they will direct you to the right window. In general, local people are very nice. Third, be sure to take as early of ferry to the island as possible. I got there for the 3 pm ferry on a Monday and it was still a long queue to board and standing room only but better than weekends when we had to fight to even get into the terminal. Leaving the island, take the ferry before 11 ish or so. Travel very light, there is no place for luggage on the ferry, not enough seats, and people push, run, shove, cut, etc. Just stay put, look ahead, and don't give an inch. Don't get upset, this is the way it is, Chinese have had to fight for everything they have and therefore, it is normal and people don't mean to be rude. Lastly, forget the low roads by the boulevard, it is very commercial, same foods, products, etc. Take the high roads up and be sure to visit the Piano Museum at the very top of Gulangyu.
