Dominating the Plaza de Armas is the statue of Ferdinand Magellan. Different tributes are on each of the four sides of the plinth. On top is Portugese explorer Magellan, first person to circumnavigate the world, gazing out to the Straits of Magellan which he visited...More

We visited the square and found this monument. It is typical from people to kiss the Indian's toe, as they say that this is the only way you can come back to Patagonia... I preferred not to kiss the toe.

The Plaza de Armas is a good place to sit and watch locals and tourists. It was across the street from the Hotel Cabo de Hornos and the Palacio Sara Braun. The plaza has mature trees for shade and benches. The historic statue to the...More

For those interested in the history of Magellan this is an interesting statue to see. When you experience the waters of Cape Horn and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans it is amazing that anyone would have attemped crossing them in small wooded boats.

This entry should be merged with the other entry on TripAdvisor for the same monument. Like all Punta Arenas' monuments, this needs either good plaques depicting the history and significance of the monument or a local guide. It is centrally located in the mail square.

Statue to honour the Portuguese sailor in the service of Charles I. His voyage around the world contributed largely to the power of Spain in the 16th century.

The statue in the square of Punta Arenas reminds us all of Magellan's historic and courageous voyage around the world.....even though he lost his life on it toward the end (they didn't teach this last fact in my history class so I was a bit...More

An impressive statue of a Magellan in a small park in the central area. I like how he's facing toward the Strait. The park is a good place to sit and watch locals and tourists alike. Across the street is the Palacio Sara Braun. Easy...More

It's just a statue...not much else. Doesn't even make a really good picture. Not much to do in this small town.
