Queen Jelena Madjevka Park is the oldest public park in Zadar, and built on top of the Grimaldi stronghold next to and has its one entrance from the Square of the Five Wells.
It was founded by the Austrian leader Baron Franz Ludwig von Welden in 1829, a passionate botanist and admirer of Dalmatian plants, and it was the first public garden in Dalmatia, intended for visitors and tourists as a tourist destination.
It’s entrance proved a bit tricky to find for us with us firstly going to the other public green space across the road whilst we tried to find out how to get inside the steep walls. We found this one much more interesting than the public park across the road primarily because of its more interesting planting but especially as its elevated position gives great views across the town and of the harbour and the Land gates. The central dome area is well worth the climb if you are fit and able as it affords good vistas when you get to the top. It’s free to enter and there is the Bar Zedana inside which was a good stop for refreshments during the day but looked like it became more of a nightclub for the young locals during the evening.

We stopped by for a brief visit. The park has playground equipment and benches. It’s a great photo spot and overlooks a small harbor and a picturesque city gate.
There are pay toilets but I can’t comment on them much.
Area was clean and lots of tourists! Me included.

This was a lovely discovery on our second trip to Zadar. It is a quiet, pretty, little park next to a busy square. It offers a pretty view of the Land City Gates as well as other parts of Zadar. There are plenty of benches so one can sit and enjoy nature.

We tend to wander on holidays, rather than following a specific plan - once we've left the airport that is.
Located at 5 Wells Square, you might not notice this park at first, but don't dismiss it. Have a wander along it's shaded paths with spectacular views across the city, from Fosa Harbour and across the other parks located close by. On a cool spring day it was easy to forget there was a city here - so green, lush and peaceful. Loved it.
Beautifully looked after - in fact, the whole of Old Zadar is really clean, no litter, no dog poop despite every local seeming to have a dog, hardly any graffiti, the town council does an excellent job.

This is a delightful, small park on the edge of Old Town. It is very peaceful compared to other parts of Old town Zadar. It is filled with beautiful trees and other plants. Many benches are spread throughout the park.

This is relatively small garden with a cafe/bar in it's center. Beautiful alleys, a lot of different trees and flowers. Great to chill out. Lacks benches though.

With the big brother Vladimira Nazora across the road we only had time to wander in this beautiful bit of greenery at the end of the old town of Zadar. Plus we were looking for a WC and accomplished that mission !! The park is above the Land Gate (Kopnena vrata) and looks over the Adriatic Sea. It had a bar/restaurant and was setting up for a big night it appeared and was a relaxing spot after walking the length & breadth of Zadar, well worth a drop in !!
