    Medieval atmosphere
In this iconic old square with its medieval atmosphere, there is an eleventh-century church and other historic buildings, as well as cafés. It was in this square that the main events during the Middle Ages took place. It used to be the City Guard next to the Clock Tower (which emerged in the 13th century) and served as a courthouse, council chamber and library.

    The town square.
This square is the center of the ancient city and already existed in the Middle Ages. We found the municipal Guard building dating back to 1562. The clock tower was added later in the early 19th century.

Square in the Old City of Zadar
Passing the gate into the old town, you can enter the square along the way. The cathedral is centered on souvenir shops, Trips, restaurants, and ice cream shops, and this is a good thing to see. The square itself is not unusual, but it would be good if you had some time to look around and take a look at the next schedule.

Zadar, historically known as Zara (from Venetian and Italian), is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia.

Everything that has ever mattered in Zadar, since the medieval period, happened or was heard of at the People's Square. This is where life happens. It is a small square, but very well organized and with lots of restaurants and shops around. Narodni trg assumed the role of the city’s main square after the Roman forum fell into disuse.

Among the sights of Zadar, you will find the City Guard, which dates back to 1562 and at the top there is a clock tower dating from the 19th century.

The Gradska Loža (City Lodge/Town Loggia) where municipal decisions were once made is situated across from City Guard. Today set behind glass, it functions as an exhibition space.

As an aside, we only spent two nights in Zadar – in hindsight, we could have used another day. We really enjoyed our time here, Zadar is one of Dalmatia’s larger cities, but it did not feel that way, and parking was affordable (rate increases during the summer, we visited in May). It also has a long history with lots of interesting architecture. First settled by the Illyrians, the Romans, then Venetians, heavily bombed during WWII and held under siege during the Homeland War.

From the People's Square, paths lead in all directions, but take the time to grab a coffee.

Peoples Square; Since its Medieval origins Narodni Trg has been the core of Zadar's public life. Dominating the westerns side of the square, the City Guard dates back to the 1562 and it's crested by a 19th-century clock tower. Nearby, St. Lawrence church is the oldest preserved building of the town, while the Loggia on the opposite side is now a venue for exhibitions. It is only small but perfectly formed.

People’s Square is historically the centre of public life in Zadar and has apparently gone through various transformations over the years. The current Town Hall was built in recent times, however, traces of old Zadar can still be found like the small Pre-Romanesque St Lawrence Church and the City Guard which was erected during mid-century. Presently many cafes and bars enclose the square.

Although the place is historic, this square is full of tables and chairs with people drinking beer and smoking electronic cigarettes and the smell there is very strong. Despite this, it is possible to see the City Hall building, built in 1934, facing the square, as well as the Renaissance Loggia (Gradska loza), built by Michele Sanmicheli in 1565 as the city's court and today used for exhibitions. Nearby, the Municipal Guard Palace, from the 17th century. XVI, with a clock tower from 1798, houses the Ethnographic Museum, which has collections of typical costumes and objects from all over the country.

This square is in the middle of Old Town Zadar and a short walking distance from anywhere in Old Town. People seem to gather here, so its a great spot to people watch. There was a pretty Christmas tree there during the Christmas season.

You cannot really miss it. Central, cozy and with lots of seatings for a drink or a meal. The square is surrounded by old buildings, incl. a bell tower.

Narodni Square is the centre of public life in Zadar from the Renaissance until today. On the site of the Large Square, platea magna, the foundations of municipal institutions were laid in the early Middle Ages.
A fantastic place to stop for a drink and enjoy the swifts.
