- Thecatsmum4Kettering, United Kingdom2,617 contributionsThe Easter Decoration is stunningWe visited the church as part of a day tour with our holiday company and fell lucky in that it was approaching Easter, when the flower carpets are being laid. The inside of the church was decorated in a stunning fashion with purple banners and a lovely flower carpet. The outside of the church has fantastic decorative architecture. If you get the chance to visit this area around Easter be prepared for some stunning decorations and processions.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 28 April 2024
- Cosmic Sand TravelsMiami, Florida62 contributionsMust see! Best rooftop views of the city! This is a beautiful church that has the best rooftop views in the city! For only $40 Quetzales per person (for non residents) you can walk around and go up to the dome to enjoy the best views! A favorite for weddings and receptions. We visited during the Festival of Lights city celebrations and it was astonishing to see at night as well. There are lot of vendors outside but I didn’t find them pushy like some say, on the contrary, they were very nice and welcoming. I tried the local artesanal ice cream and it was very refreshing! Some days they close at 4:30 pm and 5pm so make sure to go earlier.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 July 2024

This church is quite popular with locals and tourists alike. It is quite picturesque with its vibrant yellow façade and white details. Honestly though, other than the few hints of native vegetation featured on its front , it does not stand out from many colonial churches that litter Mexico and South America. The towers are quite squat and bulky (I get it, the earthquakes) and the façade looks like dozens of others , unless you really pay attention to the details. I visited during the semana santa and I was not allowed to venture inside, by an angry-looking Guatemalan man.

At one end of town, not far from the arc, this beautifully facades church has a simple architectural interior but with a series of very ornate secondary altars and homages to various saints. It is very much a locals place of worship, so no entry fee, but respectful photography is allowed in all bar the special sacristy where a dress code (no shorts) also applies.
There is a large fountain outside under a shady tree lined square so, whilst there are some hawkers there, it is also a good place to rest for a bit

One of the larger, better preserved, and exterior well-maintained churches in this city with many to choose from. Just from the Square, colorful, accessible, and a great place to observe the locals practicing their vibrant and still live in Catholicism. Labels and signage on the altars is better than average.

This church was one of the few buildings that survived the deadly and catastrophic earthquake that flattened most of the city in the past. It is well built and there is many fine details and is very ornate. It is very well kept up and you can feel a sense of history while visiting.

A few dollars to go up to the roof of this magnificent church. Do not hesitate to ask for directions inside as the dedicated access is not very easy to find. We were told that it was only possible to go up to the roof on Thursday and Friday and honestly it is worth the detour with a photo session included.

Built in the 1760s to withstand earthquakes and still standing although there is some current renovation work to the building structure. Beautiful yellow and white facade.
And do visit the ruins of the monastery behind the church.

This church is both well restored and beautiful maintained. In fact they are painting the outside again as I write. It’s not anything like as ornate inside as many other churches of a similar period but, again, it’s very well maintained. Worth a short visit but note that no entry is allowed when mass is being held.

In its characteristic yellow color, this church stands out for its beautiful, delicately decorated baroque columns. Its vaulted interior is impressive.
In the atrium there are usually religious activities and/or traditional celebrations.
A lot of activity in the area, especially on weekends, where you can find dishes of Guatemalan cuisine.

HI, I saw you posted about a market called Tim pok. I remember going to a market near Inglesa de Merced and I'm wondering if that maybe the name of the market I'm looking for. I remember that the building was redish-orange and that you'd enter from the left hand side up a ramp and into a building. Does any of that sound like what you remember?
Thanks
Carrie

The indoor market is named Nim Pot. It was once a movie theater. It is next to Frida'a Mexican Restaurant.
You cannot bargain in there, but prices are reasonable.
