A wealth of Ceramics Knowledge

Lucho gave us a world class tour and explanation of his shop and how he creates his ceramic masterpieces. He was generous with his expertise and his time. A must visit in Ollantaytambo. Get some amazing Peruvian art!

Beauty and history

At our lovely hotel in Ollytantaytambo we saw a display case of beautiful pottery. The clerk noticed us looking and told us we could possibly see the potter at work in his studio. We took a little cab, but the driver had to actually phone Lucho, the ceramicist, to figure out where to go. Lucho met us. His studio is right off the square near the temple a few steps down a beautiful little Inca street. You'll want to explore it, too.

The objects we saw there were so far above anything else we've seen, probably anywhere but a museum. We learned a lot from Lucho, who spent 20 years in the Southwest in the US working with indigenous people there.

Lucho is an avid historian and we learned interesting things about Peru and the Incas, as well as about pottery techniques and history. A visit here is like having a guided tour not just of ceramics, but of Inca history.

He uses techniques that are rare and bring out an amazing sheen without glaze, and the objects are clearly works of art. The piece we loved the most needed to be fired, but we were going to Machu Picchu the next day. Lucho offered to have it ready for our return if it survived firing (it did). He wrapped in so it was easy to pack and survived the trip home. It's one of our prize pieces of art.

However, this is a very small place, probably not good for more than four visitors, and definitely not for small children unless you are wearing them in a Snuggli.

World Class Ceramicist in Sacred Valley

Lucho Soler is one of the top, if not the top, active Peruvian ceramicists. His work is influenced by his pre-Columbian Peruvian roots as well as the 20+ years he has spent working with the best North American Indian artists in New Mexico. His work is exquisite and each piece is unique. At his studio you can see both completed works and works in progress as well as talk with Soler himself (he is very fluent in English). He will ship his work to you at home, though we opted to take ours with us. This is an absolute don't miss spot in Ollantaytambo!
