We had read Belen Market could be dangerous, so we asked our tour guide to bring us. The market didn't seem dangerous to us, but we enjoyed the benefit of knowing where to go. He led us to different areas of the market and pointed...More

We visited this area without guide. We walked through the market. Everywhere was mess. We visited also streets where poor people are living. It was quite dangerous. Again dirty and stinky. Many sick skinny dogs and cats on the streets. I couldn’t wait to leave...More

After several markets in South America we were looking forward to explore this interesting place.. and it was very special, I would say the most different market we ever saw. I guess it’s not for everyone because of the animals and the smell. But to...More

It is fascinating to walk on the market. Anything you can think of is available there! Try to take a boat to see the floating houses!

Belen is a district in Iquitos. Most people, including me, visit this place to walk around the market and to see the floating houses. Since currently it's low water season there is not much floating going on 😃. To get to Belen I took a...More

Very interesting either the market and the floating city. But better to take a guided tour. Not every place there is safe for tourists. But definetly a very good place to visit!

I really enjoyed visiting Belen. If you are looking for anything dealing with Shamanism you must visit the Shaman alley at Belen. A lot of what you see int eh city can be bought cheap at the market.

An overwhelming dose of poverty, disease, overcrowding, exploitation, and filth. The public market is mindwarping. The houses on stilts piranisian in their effect, especially the understory area during the dry spell. Well worth a visit to see what much of Peru is really like. Get...More

You won't have any trouble in engaging a reliable guide in Iquitos: your hotel will help you. BTW, I really like the Victoria Regia for a hotel -- owner Carlos Acosta is very helpful.
