Nice museum ( dont go if You are not able to translate with your phone or don t know any Spanish). Check out the numismatic submuseum downstairs. Backpacks to be handes in at the entrance. Like all museums in Cuenca they ask Some questions for visitors statistics.

Outside gardens and archeological sites are open and beautiful. Pottery exhibit indoors impressive although lacking in English explanations. Shrunken head exhibit in English. Free museum. The day we went there was an excellent dance/music performance in lobby.

Excellent free museum covering archaeology of the region as well as the ethnography of the indigenous cultures. Very little of the information is in English. The Shuar exhibit has both English and Spanish. (Beware, it does contain shrunken human heads.) The coin museum on the lower level is interesting, combining Ecuador’s physical money with economic and political history. It is also only in Spanish.

NOTE: As of April 2023, the outdoor spaces, including the gardens and the Incan ruins, are closed. The security guard did not know when they would reopen.

The museum is free. I liked that we can learn about the history of Cuenca and the ethnic groups in Ecuador. Do have Google translate on your phone (non-Spanish speakers) because there isn't signs in English. The ruins are interesting to visit and the park is really beautiful. You can spend between 1.5-2 hours here if you go through everything.

It's really several small museums in one building. It's the place to go if you want to learn about the history of Cuenca from prehistory to the present. Informative about Ecuadorean cultures outside the Cuenca area as well. I also enjoyed the religious, photographic, and numismatic exhibits. Admission is free so you can do part of the museum, walk to a nearby cafe for lunch, and then come back and see the rest.

I learned, as usual, things I did not know. For example, the degree to which the French were involved in Ecuador starting in the 1700s. There is an entire room dedicated to one French scientist.

The actual museum was closed due to Covid when I was there. However, the ruins were interesting and there were stairs leading down to a garden area with an aviary and llamas grazing on the hillside. I really enjoyed the time I spent here.

The display was really lovely and I had the feeling that one day wouldn't be enough to see everything you wanted to see! It was divided in sections and had a special exhibition on Indian culture, but that didn't interfere with the usual show of Ecuadorian history. All in all it was very well made and the paths easy to follow. The outdoor area is also great for relaxing and enjoying the view on Cuenca. Definitely recommend to visit!

If you think you can do this museum in a couple of hours you are sadly mistaken. Plan for the better portion of the day at the very least. A few days would be more like the time you would need to fully appreciate and explore the history of the Ecuadorian people and culture. However, if all you can afford is a few hours, then it’s time well spent.

Well organized and very diverse. The Ghandinexhibit was memorable and the Indigenous displays well laid out and informative.
