Outperformed expectations. We attended to see Il Viaggio a Reims, and what an extraordinary performance! It requires quite a large cast of Bel Canto soloists, and I had been warned Chile might be hard pressed to attract the ideal singers but WOW! I was so impressed with the performers and the way the director made the most of a simple set and costumes. The theatre itself is a little jewel-box, well worth seeing; ideally for a performance if you can, but tour it if you cannot make a show. Acoustic is fabulous. Curiously for a country so well known for its wine, no alcohol is served, so one is left with coffee or water at the interval - oh well. People did NOT dress even though this was an opening performance - very casual. Be aware the surrounding area is NOT safe after dark, and our performance which was scheduled to end at 8:30 ran until 9:00, making for a very anxious 10 minute walk back to the hotel - ideally, arrange for Uber or a car service to pick you up, even if staying nearby. But definitely GO!!

I went to Teatro Municipal for two events during my stay in Santiago. I went to an opera (Rodelinda) and a classical piano recital (Lilya Zilberstein). Both were exceptional performances. I walked up about 30 minutes before each show and bought a balcony ticket. There was no dress code, even for the opera. Many people were wearing jeans. The theatre is a beautiful venue with outstanding sound quality. Seats are a bit cramped in the balcony but each show did have a 20 minute intermission.

Santiago is a wonderful city. Terrific restaurants and many wonderful sights to see but the night we went to the ballet was one I will never forget. The theater is magnificent, reminiscent of the Paris Opers House. We had lovely seats and were shocked by how inexpensive they were. I have seen ballet performances all around the world but their production of Raymonda was breathtaking. The costumes and sets were lavish. The company was one of the finest I’ve ever seen. Go!

I went on December to see the Nutcracker and it only cost me 1.000CLP it was cheap and the seats were nice despite the fact that they were cheap, It was a Russian ballet and i got nothing more to say that it was wonderful I felt the Christmas spirit and how professional it was. The place is a bit old but it gives a historical vibe. I really recommend this place to see any show

Originally inaugurated in 1857, the Teatro Municipal has suffered from fires and earthquakes, the most recent being a serious fire in 1927. Through it all, the building has been restored and modernized, and is said to have an opulent interior. It was declared a National Monument in 1974. The institution maintains an active arts calendar hosting ballet, opera, theater and musical performances, including well-known international guests. It would be worth checking the schedule when you’re in Santiago to see if you can attend an event.

Because we wanted to see the theatre, we decided on very short notice to attend the opera Norma. We enjoyed the experience fully, assisted by the two line screen well above the stage which provided a Spanish translation of the Italian. We were able to buy tickets for the first balcony directly opposite the stage so had very good sight lines. We are not knowledgable about opera but the production seemed very fine with wonderful voices to convey the story. The theatre is beautiful. It may seem dated to some but represents a huge commitment to the arts, together with the orchestra, the chorus, & the ballet company.

We saw Norma and we enjoyed the good performance. We were in the platea, some rows far from the scene, central seatings. I guess this made a big difference as I walked in other places on upper floors and the view and the quality seatings looked quite uncomfortable.
Inside it is nice, decorations are simple, building quite small. The seatings even in the platea are quite narrow and for people to get their seats implies lots of movements of others already in their place.
Good to have an underground parking just in front for 3.000 CLP, although it took us almost 30 min to drive out at the end of the opera.
