On our cruise ship shore excursion, we made a very brief stop at Puerto Montt's main square, brief because it looked like a war zone.
Approaching the square, we noticed that most buildings were either boarded up or had every window broken. We couldn't see the main attraction adjoining the square, Iglesia Catedral de Nuestra Senora del Carmen (Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), because it was completely boarded up. Our guide explained that there were ongoing civil disturbances caused by a dispute over Chile's constitution.
TRAVEL MOMENT:
* As we pulled up to Plaza de Armas, our guide announced that we wouldn't be getting out because of civil disturbances. Then she got a phone call, turned to us and announced that we wouldn't be seeing Osomo Volcano or Petrohue Falls because overnight rain had caused a mudslide, blocking the road. Trying to figure out how to entertain us for the next several hours, the guide took us to Teatro del Lago, a beautiful theater on Lake Llanquihue. The theater doors were locked. Wasn't funny at the time, but it is now!

Walked around and saw a few local artists performing as well as various craft vendors selling their wares.

This is the place where we saw the most damage outside of the Santiago region--graffiti on walls, broken windows, boarded up churches and office buildings. Also, there was a protest brewing so we left quickly.

I am wondering why this is listed as an attraction. You are in the front of the cathedral. And at the waterfront. One monument in remembrance for the German immigrants. That it is.

I was a little disappointed with this Plaza De Armas, it looks a little forgotten. Having said this there is an area that is boarded up, hopefully some work being carried out here, to improve the look of the Plaza.
The is a fantastic view of the Cathedral from the Plaza.

It is just a short walk away from the shore, and is worth going to see all the visitors and locals. It is a comfortable place to sit or stand. There seems to be plenty of activities going on. It is easily within walking distance of restaurants, hotels, and shops.

This is your typical tow square, located very close to the port and the board walk, with an very helpful information center across the street, benches to sit, places to eat and drink around!

This was listed on our tour map as a thing to see whilst in town. A very imposing building with great architecture.

This is the square in the center of town where you will find the old church plus a lot of places to eat and drink.

Unfortunately this was being worked on while we visited off a cruise ship and the whole area was not accessible and blocked off. With all the one way streets this whole area was difficult to access by vehicle.
