To make it clear from the beginning: Satay Street is a tourist attraction. Locals tend to visit it occasionally but prefer to go to Lau Pa Sat next door. I have lived for 3 months (Apr-June 2022) next door and I have it seen opening in the evening and closing at 2-3 am from my apartment. I have been down to get a satay chicken and prawns at least once a week. Stands 7/8 are very busy due to their so-called reputation of “best satay” by Tripadvisor. Nice marketing gig that attracts many people and mainly tourists.

In fact, it is the worst to order your satay. The vendors have developed an attitude and are arrogant and sometimes rude. You must wait at least 30 minutes (weekends longer) to get your order, but if you speak Malay – like me – you’ll get the order in 5-10 minutes. Are they the best? No, they are mediocre and equal to the others I had the pleasure to try all out in these 3 months. To me, Boot 19 deserves the predicate of best satay stand. Why? The people are (still) friendly, their satay is tasty and good (also halal), tasty peanut sauce with real peanuts. Differences: 7 out of 10 times I got back to my apartment and either the onions, cucumber or lontong (compressed rice cake) were missing as a side from stand 7/8, and twice some satays were still uncooked. Another test you should take is to count the satays you ordered! Never did they give me the spicy soy-sauce (ketjap) with my prawn satay. OK, if you sit there, you can ask for it, but this is a better test how accurate (honest?) they are. In never had any complaints with the others. So, stand 7/8 being boosted to be the “best satay” by Tripadvisor only has a limited lifespan. After 3 months, they definitely have lost my patronage.

I would say that all vendors are equal and deserve an opportunity to be tried. I would give an earmark to stand #19 for their friendliness, taste and speed. To me, they are the best stand for 2021/22. This might of course change when their business will grow. Will see next year when I am back for 3 months again. For now, I enjoyed it, but skip stand 7&8 as an advice. Maybe loosing business will bring back a necessary change of attitude and focus on quality. Fortunately, there are enough others who deserve a fair chance after the covid hardship! Enjoy!

Had a nice session with my family. The satay is great and there wasn't a lot of touting based in our experience. The bbq seafood, stingray behind the stalls were fantastic!

Bad experience at stall 6 stuck up and felt the tables in front of their stall belonged to them.. massively bad touting even scolded the stall I ordered from. Authorities should look into their gangsterism behavior bad experience for tourists

I’ve been here a couple of times. Ordered from Satay Power 6, right on Boon Tat St! Probably one of the best satay and jumbo prawns I’ve ever had! Try to avoid visiting them on weekends, go on weekdays instead!

There will be other vendors shoving menus into your face, just be firm and tell them your preferred stall. It’s usually happening outdoor so lose the jacket.

This was very hyped up to us on youtube etc before we arrived. And while it was decidedly cool to eat satay in the middle of a closed street, it was more expensive and not as tasty as the satay we had elsewhere, and it was also very annoying because they kept coming up to you and trying to sell more food, wet wipes, and drinks even after sitting down and ordering (and saying no thanks three times). So if we went to Singapore again we'd have our satay elsewhere.

Great Satay Sticks! We were staying nearby and walked down to this street. They kept the beers coming and we enjoyed a mix of satays. 7 & 8 were the busiest, but all were keen to serve. I didn’t like having dirty old menus shoved at me from all directions however kinda felt sorry for the quiet stalls once I settled into the atmosphere.

Why? Because EVERY stall will greet you, will offer you the menu, will serve you the satay immediately. Same-same.

Just because one people in TripAdvisor said 7&8, then another couple Travellers followed, then Australian TV came, followed by Korean & Taiwan TV.. ? Yep. That’s how it goes.

I went tonight, saw the stall 7&8, saw all the shishishasha and decided to go to the stall that gave me warmer welcome and broader smile, stall 6 (Satay Power, kitschy name i know!). The big guy welcomed us with his bubbly super friendly and smiley attitude, then his super nice mom delivered the food, and we saw the hard working Dad worked happily on the satay grill. I looked back on the stall 7&8, all the staff looked tired and gloom. Sad.

Food wise, I’m sure it taste as great as the other stall. Hygienic, yes definitely. It’s Singapore. Everything regulated here. You definitely won’t get belly problem because the food is unhygienic, unless your belly is chickening out with all the thousands new spices you haven’t taste before.

So, why go with the mainstream?
