The town is pretty & quaint, with plenty of interesting shops, good restaurants, decent toilets and awesome photographic spots everywhere. We were there early November and the fall foliage was past peak season but still so lovely. The views of the Great Wall were tremendous....More

We caught the bus here from Beijing on a Wednesday, a 1.5hr direct bus journey for 48yuan (see pics for how to catch bus, which is very easy). We arrived at 11am, bought entry tickets including access to Great Wall and Cable car for 280yuan...More

We were a little concerned when we read it is a tourist recreation and not a genuine old village. However it works. I don't know why as we normally hate imitations, but we loved this place. It is so well done that you suspend your...More

We are so lucky we picked this season to visit this gorgeous little water town (yeah it's not authentic but neither is Disneyland). Every nook and corner is pretty in autumn hues and is a photographer's dream come true. It's not enough to go there...More

What a charming fairytale resort. This place is huge. A little city of its own with many buildings, hotels, restaurants and spas. It is so charming. The buildings are nestled around rivers and bridges and stone walkways. Feels like an old French town with cobblestone...More

Although perhaps not entirely authentic, this gives a wonderful sense of what village life might have been like in older times. As China modernises rapidly and these environments are lost in favour of modern appartments, this is a nostalgic look at rural life. It is...More

If you're looking for an authentic water town, this is not it, as it is a replica. It is difficult to navigate, especially if you don't speak Mandarin. It has fantastic Great Wall access though that wasn't crowded at all in July.

If you go from the international airport it takes a couple of hours. Obviously different times of day traffic is busier. I would give yourself at least 3 hours to travel to be sure.
