We did the Huanghuacheng to Xishuiyu hike. While it was not an easy one (not recommended for kids below 12), we were quite glad of the experience (we were the only one at the wall). There were sections of the unrestored wall which was quite...More
Had previously done Mutianyi section of the wall so wanted to try a section that was a bit less commercial and more raw - well this is the section to do. Did a private tour through China Hiking and John the guide was fantastic -...More
So many are obsessed with the Great Wall of China and I finally got it.
Tourists know Badaling, but it’s not very representative considering the massive length of the Wall.
So I started to explore the wilder sections, and here I arrived at Huanghuacheng Great...More

Second time to the GW, first time was years ago but pretty crowded, so this time I asked our driver to go somewhere off the beaten track. Loved it! It’s a bit of a hike to the tower, and then a steady steep uphill climb...More
If I had to choose between Badaling and Huanghuacheng, it's a no brainer. I would definitely choose Huanghuacheng, its far more local, far less crowded and has better views. I went during national week and we pretty much had the wall to ourselves. However getting...More

I climbed to the 13th power. It took over an hour and I’m in not too bad of shape. The stairs are so uneven. I can’t imagine what the people went through to build this wall there’s like 1400 miles of it.
Outstanding experience. We were alone on the Wall for a few hours which was a magical and unique experience. The organization was on point, the guide was amazing, knowledgeable, kind ! Would warmly recommend, everything was on point !
There is no singular "Huanghuacheng" entrance. Some places have a fee, others do not. Our driver took us up and we got out, wandered up a trail and through the back of a local restaurant. It was maybe a 50m elevation gain... More
There is no singular "Huanghuacheng" entrance. Some places have a fee, others do not. Our driver took us up and we got out, wandered up a trail and through the back of a local restaurant. It was maybe a 50m elevation gain on a dirt path, then you scramble up onto the wall at a low point. We tipped the owners of the restaurant and bought sodas and snacks on our way out, that was it.
