Once a summer retreat for emperors, this 290-acre park is still a retreat for the crowd-weary tourist, who can relax here or stroll around ancient pavilions, mansions, temples, bridges and huge lake, stopping occasionally at a shop or tea-house.

One of the best sights for history in BJ, get there as early as possible. Like other reviewers have said, if you go on weekends, prepare for the battle of crowds as you have to contend with swathes of Chinese tourists too. That said, it...More

This interesting palace has lots of history so go with a tour or buy a guide book to enhance your visit. It does get busy and is spread out so comfortable shoes are a must. Take the short boat trip as an added bonus.

I really enjoyed the time spent here, you can do a boat trip across the lake or just walk around. There's plenty to see here.

We went with our 9 month old baby. The west side of the area is not stroller friendly. Full of steps. Also, we couldn't manage the steps of Buda's temple with young baby and stroller. The Summer Palace is a huge and beautiful complex, family...More

Peking is very stressful and might have a lot of haze. This is a place to relax and breath. Take a walk for some 2 hours along the lake and up the hill to the temple and dive back into the city

Nope, no need for a tour guide. As stated there are audio guides you can rent but it is such a large place I would just use a map and do a little online research before arriving.
