If you want to travel to Cairo than choose your hotel in Zamalek area. It's tourist friendly area. Little costly compare to other areas like Maadi, etc but you will find all thing near by... Like Cairo Museum, downtown shopping center, Giza Pyramid, Nile river,...More
The Island is right at the heart of the city, it has relatively a lot of green and some nice spots to sit and watch the Nile or rent a boat to go on the river.
