Walk up to the Pantheon in the early evening for wonderful views over Tbilisi and the distant mountains. In the grounds you can see the tomb of Griboedev and other Georgian luminaries in the arts.

we were very lucky to meet a very knowledgeable Russian lady who could tell us about most important Georgian people buried in this impressive place . To all this another casual meeting with a local priest who told us about the older history of the place and the 4 churches with their significance ...

We enjoyed the view and the atmosphere, but we were lost without a guide who would provide context to all the gravestones and stories behind these people.

You can enter Pantheon if go down by the serpentine from mountain Mtatsminda, or rise up by the funiculars.
Here are the church and the graves of the famous Georgians, also the writer Griboyedov and his wife.
Note, all inscriptions are made in Georgian.
Also, here is a fantastic view of Tbilisi.

We got off the funicular to visit here. It's a small complex - you walk down a series of steps under the station and the down the hillside slightly to get to the pantheon.
There are quite a few different graves here. We were lucky that they were ringing the bell for a service when we were here.

You can walk down the hill from Mtatsminda and then you will pass the Pantheon automatically - or vice versa.

Great views & gravestones were very interesting. Would recommend. Get off halfway up the lovely funicular - take 0.50GEL for the toilets!

Beautiful place. Fantastic view. You can see all Tbilisi. It needs just 20-25 min to look around, but very impressive.

The Pantheon on Mtatsminda might be compared to Paris' Pere Lachaise in its significance. Mtatsminda (Holy Mountain) is where the 6th century Saint David of Gareji founded an Orthodox Monastic complex. A beautiful stone chapel adorned with mosaics covers the entrance to his cave cell where he resided. From that time forward this site has been considered hallowed ground. The Pantheon was established in the 1920's, and is the resting place of Georgia's most honored poets, artists, musicians, actors, scholars, and national heroes. Each monument is beautiful and unique. One of the most beautiful is to Prince Ilia Chavchavadze, canonized a Saint. The statue in his memorial was created by Jakob Nikoladze, a pupil of Rodin. Another moving tribute is to the Russian writer Griboyedov and his Georgian wife Princess Nino Chavchavadze. The view from here is quite amazing; on clear days one can see the snow-capped Caucasus mountains in the distance. Mtatsminda and the Pantheon are a sacred place where one can go to reflect, to observe beautiful sights, and to come closer to God in nature and within the holy church of Saint David of Garegi.

You can walk or take a taxi. It's a really difficult walk, so I wouldn't recommend doing this with children or if you have a heart condition! If you like hiking and are generally fit, then the walk is invigorating!!

The name Mtatsminda derived from Atoni St. mountain in the 10th century, at the same time the Mtatsminda mountain is called ‘Mamadaviti’ due to the legend saying that St. Father Davit Garejeli lived in the cave of this mountain in the 6th century. On the very place a church was founded in the 10th century that was already functionless as a church in 13th and 14th centuries, but in 1542 a Virgin Mary cloister was restored on the place of the old church by the leadership of the brothers Nikoloz and Davit Gabashvili. In the 18th century the church was functionless and the damaged buildings were gradually being ruined.
