The Independence Monument in Yangon
Feb 2021 • Solo
Independence Monument, which stands in grandeur at the heart of Yangon, turns 72 years old today. Its foundations were laid when Myanmar regained independence from the British on Jan. 4, 1948. The obelisk is 155 feet (47.2 meters) tall, 10 feet in foundation and is higher than Yangon City Hall and the High Court, but shorter than Sule Pagoda. Some colonial architecture building, church, mosque and Hindu temple is contemporary building like this monument and the park.

A Monument
Mar 2020
This Monument is significant to Myanmar to celebrate independence from being a colony to the British Empire.

It is located in a nice park.

UGH!
Jan 2020 • Couples
Rarely have I been to a large city that looked so unattractive. This monument is the center piece for the park that sits in the colonial section of old Yangon. There are lots of colonial buildings in the area but collectively they are run-down and very unappealing. The square this monument resides in is also very unattractive and it is surrounded by old buildings not really worth taking a picture of. There may be historical significance here and city tours start here but this monument, park and area is really quite forgettable. Perhaps in the future when the country can afford it and cares enough to fix up the area things will be very different but for right now, this independence monument is not a harbinger of a bright future.

Nice monument in a nice little park
Dec 2019 • Solo
It’s a nice monument located on small little park, lots of locals sit in for chat and lunch.

Worth a quick look you only need 10 minutes, located opposite the sule pagoda.

Worth dropping by for a quick view
Jul 2019 • Solo
It is worth stopping by for a quick view and take a photo. Beware of the Dala scammers around here. They would approach you saying they are students and want to practice English and then proceed to inviting you to their village to see free pagodas and the areas are hit by tsunami. Other than that just say no nicely.

Dec 2018 • Couples
Maha Bandula Park is famous and popular park in Yangon ,most of foreigners are interest to visit this park.
It has Independent Monument and very prominent icon of Yangon.Sule Pagoda is very matched with this monumental one ,can be learned what the Stone has described of Burmese old history.
Everything looked really nice , amazing of local beautiful face and culture of style and beautiful smile. This park is crowded peoples in holidays and week end days.It is very nice gardens, lovely to walk around. There are a plenty of seats to sit either in sun or shade. Small shops selling cold drinks and ice cream is near by . Good place to relax and chill out.

Interesting feature of the park
Feb 2019 • Friends
Worth visiting the monument to read the inscriptions. Sadly the locals don’t show any interest, preferring to just roam around the park, and use the monument to sit around chatting.

An obelisk replacing queen Victoria
Dec 2018 • Solo
The white obelisk was erected after 1948 when Burma achieved independence from Britain. The old statue of Victoria which it replaced was shipped back to England.

10 chinthe (half-lion, half-dragon) are lined up in concentric circles at the base of the monument. They look determined to defend independence. The text on the obelisk is in Burmese script only, perhaps an early signal the character of the new state is Burmese. Note that at the time Rangoon was a very cosmopolitan city with a majority South Indian population and not only a significant Burmese, but also Chinese minority.
