it is about one hour drive from Paramaribo. All that is left are the remains of a synagoge and a graveyard.

We found it very worthwhile to experience this site, which is just off the river. While it is true that all that's left of the synagogue is some ruins, there were a few signs and old photographs that tried to put things in context. We...More

Historic and a little bit mysterious place. In the midst of the jungle, near the Suriname river suddenly there is a place with the remains of an old Jewish plantation: the ruin of a synagogue, stone tombs of Jewish people and wooden crosses above the...More

Around 600 Jewish families became plantation owners in the area called the Jodensavanne, 50 kilometers upriver from Paramaribo. The area is now an historical site. There is a small museum with a lot of interesting photographs.

After reading the book How expensive was the sugar I really enjoyed visiting Joden Savanne. Our guide was excellent but we missed the tour by Cynthia McLeod by a day which was a pity

Although it's a place of huge historical value, I must admit I was a little disappointed visiting Jodensavanne. There wasn't much left to see except two graveyards and some bricks that belonged to the synagoge. It's a place I wouldn't have want to have missed...More
