- Jeffry bEssendon, Australia13,538 contributionsCitadel is an important historic siteThe Amman Citadel is the highest place in the city. It is surrounded by a 1.7km ( 1 mile) wall. The Citadel is some 850 meters (2,800 feet) above sea level. The Citadel is an important archaeological site, dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. Amman was an important city during the Roman and Byzantine era. The Citadel is well worth a look, you get a good view over Amman.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 September 2023
- CarribDublin, Ireland109 contributionsAmazing views from the CitadelWe walked up from the roman theatre, which added to our experience, loved the spectacular views from the top of the hill over the city centre. The call to prayer happened while we were up there and it was amazing hearing it in surround sound and ecco around the hills. It was magical. We enjoyed the archaeology museum and seeing the hand of Hercules. By 1pm it got too hot for us and we had a lovely taxi driver take us back to the city centre. Highly recommendVisited September 2023Travelled on businessWritten 25 September 2023
- AudreyBC33Philadelphia, Pennsylvania11 contributionsVisit at dusk! The citadel is quite lovely, with a fair amount to explore. I highly recommend visiting late in the day so you’re there when the sun sets. Visit the little museum on the premises early before it closes, then wander around as the light becomes golden. We saw at least three couples there for wedding pictures. The cherry on top was ending the day at the little Dar Ne’emeh cafe - sitting on the roof deck as the call to prayer rang and the lights twinkled was gloriousVisited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 September 2023

This downtown Citadel has a long history of occupation by many great civilizations. Many empires lived here over the centuries and the Citadel of Amman is considered to be among the world's oldest continuously inhabited places.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2023
- Russ LacuataLong Beach, California9,682 contributionsRich HistoryAmman Citadel offers spectacular remnants of the land's rich history. The Citadel overlook the amphitheater and also the panoramic view of the city. For history enthusiasts, and want to learn more about the place, you can hire certified guides for a fee. I do recommend visiting in the late afternoon and stay for the sunset. The city becomes golden with the mesmerizing sunset. Free with Jordan Pass.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 14 October 2023
- JessabelllNew York City, New York235 contributionsStunning views and site in the middle of the city! The Citadel has stunning views over the city! There is a rich history and lots of different areas of the site to see and visit. You can also climb up on most of the ruins to get up close and personal! It can get a bit crowded, so be patient. You can make this trip as short or as long as you want, depending on how much you want to see.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,632 contributionsBest Views of Amman Here,I took a taxi to reach this place. I showed my Jordan Pass and easily entered . There are several signagess allng the way that explained this attraction. The most photograped area is where the remaining columns stand. Noted some tourists climbing on the ruins for better photo shots. Note that there is a small museum here to visit. For me, I enjoyed most here are the views of the Amman down below. Due to its high location, I could see both the old and new neighborhoods of Amman. Tip: There is a small Restroom for one’s use near the Entrance Area.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 30 October 2023
- KMLondon22London, United Kingdom205 contributionsVery photogenicThe remains of the Temple of Zeus make this a very photogenic location. As the highest point in Amman, it also has a commanding view over the city. The small museum has some interesting exhibits, including some of the oldest human statues reportedly ever discovered. The cafe outside the entrance has a nice terrace and is good value for money.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 November 2023

- smarisettiPiscataway, New Jersey20 contributionsGreat view of the hills of Amman from the CitadelIt is a quaint place. Not really much to see. Beautiful view of the Hills of Amman. Go there on a sunny day so you can take pictures of kids playing football next to the ancient Greek temple of Hercules (or was it Roman?). The walk through the ruins of Ummayad palace takes you to another nice view of the hills of Amman. The view of the Roman theater from the top of citadel is beautiful. I felt sad visiting this place. This hill top citadel for the Greeks, then for Romans, than for Ummayads, Ayyubids (not sure if Abbasids had a presence) but there is nothing left of such long history. Amman must have been a thriving town for last 1300 years that very few places in the world can be provide of.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 15 December 2023

We hired the Odynovo Tour company. They greeted us when we de-planed, facilitated our entry through Customs, drove us to our hotel. Super-efficient! The next morning, our tour guide (his name pronounced "safe") drove us to the Citadel and patiently waited as we walked through various scenic overlooks, the museum, etc. The paths are well- defined, good signage descriptions along the way. We took about an hour to see what was of interest to us. Others could take twice as long as there is much to see. Only bathroom is at the cafe at the entry gate. Highest point so panoramic views were 360.

We arrived in the morning at 8:30 so we didn’t find many tourists! It was nice to walk around the area by ourselves. Other than the ruins, you have also an amazing view of Amman.
Be careful if you bring any kids there cause there are no safe railings all around the place and it could be very dangerous for them!

This is a well kept place at the center of Amman. Of course it is on top of a hill and surrounded by walls to keep intruders of the past away. Definitely worth seeing. The place used to be a small city well engineered. You will definitely appreciate the architecture, discipline and the level of details that the people few thousands years ago used to have.
You will need anywhere between 1-3 hours depending on your own pace and level of details you want to enjoy.

The Citadel, perched on the top of the hill is a time capsule of Jordan's history. With relics ranging from the Roman, to Byzantine to the Islamic era, all three periods are represented in Citadel. Apart from the ruins in the complex, the views of the city are the most interesting. The light brown monochrome appearance of the city is well delineated from the site.

We went in there as a small family of 5 (all adults) and the guards told us that we were not allowed to enter without a tour guide. After some negotiation with our guide and the gate guards we were able to enter. Apparently they implemented some 'rule' that people in large groups must pay a guide to lead them around. And the place wasn't even well maintained.

The citadel of Annan presents a grand view of the seemingly endless city spreading out in all directions. You can see how the city is situated on the plateau and the building that has flowed into the wadis. Some archeological restoration has need undertaken and information on contemporary stone pillars illustrates the huge time span of the city‘s development: From Iron Age to Ottoman. The museum is a modest affair. Surprising that it was first established in the 50‘s. It was superseded by the Jordan Museum. It appears that Ammanites go to the Citadel to hang out: young lads being cool, families out for a pick-nick or indeed young couples for a modest and decorous meet. If you look hard enough you can descend from the Citadel via unofficial paths through the dense housing on the steep slopes.

Included in the Jordan Pass, this should be a must see and it is really the best place to start your walk through Amman. You will have a lot to walk so if you prefer you can take a taxi to the top from anywhere in the city.
Don't miss the Museum, the Temple of Hercules and to walk around to enjoy the amazing views of the Roman Amphitheater, all of Amman and you won't miss the outstanding jordan flag on the back of the Citadel.
You can get a guide for 30JD that lead you through the place if you are really interested.

What a beautiful site! Up on-top a hill overlooking the city, you can really see the city well from there. So many interesting walls from all the building that once stood, still standing was part of some Roman columns. We had a driver and found parking near the front. You can take a guided tour or just walk it on your own, we walked it without a guide without any issues, all the sites have nice signs explaining things. Nice museum on site, along with a little cafe. Didn’t use the bathrooms, but they looked pretty clean. Beautiful park and the views of the city are amazing!

Wide span of history found at this site
From Bronze Age onwards
Information at each ruin is helpful and in English
A very open site so it will be very hot in the summer
We were quite surprised at the large size of the ruins . Also a small museum prices are very reasonable
Parking can be a problem . Since it’s so high you have a good view of the surrounding
The on-site restaurant is very good and the service was friendly
I recommend this one

The Citadel is a must see attraction in Amman. A great location on top of a hill in the center of the old part of Amman. A combination of ruins from different civilizations that settled in Amman (Bronze and Iron Ages, Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad periods). The famous pillars are the remains of the Hercules Temple. The second famous structure there is the Umayyad palace. You will also see remains of a Byzantine church, old water wells and systems, tower. The museum there has a good collection but it’s an old fashioned museum that doesn’t appear to get much attention and it needs more care.
You will see a very nice panoramic view of Amman and of the Roman theatre.
I recommend you start at the Citadel then walk down to the Hashemite plaza and the Roman Theatre. When exiting the Citadel take the road on the east side. Small curvy streets will lead you to a viewing platform facing the theater, you will find next to that a stairway that leads to the plaza and the theatre.

What time do they close on Friday's in September? Some places says 7pm, some say 4pm
Written 3 September 2022
On Fridays, the Citadel is only open from 10 am until 4 pm. Take into account that in September the days are already shorter. It's a wonderful place, take your time!!! Kind regards.

How much of time would one require to see the major attractions at the Citadel and what are they please.
Also what time due they close in winter.
Finally can you get a taxi back to the city centre / Hotel soon after sunset,
Thanks
Nawaz

The area is not so large that one can’t see everything in a three hour visit. There is an excellent, small museum that should not be missed. It should not be a problem getting a taxi back to city center. Think they close around 4 in the winter because of earlier darkness.

¿Cómo se puede llegar a La Ciudadela? Hay alguú transporte publico que te lleva hasta alli?
Written 7 May 2018
Abdul.

What would it cost , approximately , if I were to use a cab to do a free an easy tour from any of the centrally located hotels? Would it be cheaper than guides n tour packages?
Written 3 February 2018
A taxi to the citadel should cost no more than 4-5 JOD. For touring from there I would recommend looking at Lonely Planets excellent self-guided tour of Amman which is available freely (Links are not allowed here).
I used it myself and found it covered all the major landmarks. It's definitely cheaper than using a guide/tour package.
