Jerusalem has many areas that are special, Ein Kerem is one of them, like a rural area in the midst of the city, but with attractions that need to be visited.
It is an area very much related to Christianity, the site of the birth of John the Baptist, the church of the Visitation, the Church of St John, the well of Myriam, and also good restaurants, a place that is a must visit in Jerusalem

It's Jerusalem outside of the city. A lot of tourists come here all over the year and you can hear so many languages around! You have some very good restaurants in the area.
The best time for visiting - February: the Almond's trees are flourishing.

We visited the area of Ein Kerem on both of our trips to the Holy Land, most recently last summer. Ein Kerem is significant in that several holy and historic locations are in Ein Kerem such as the birthplace of St. John the Baptist at the Church and Grotto of St. John the Baptist, Mary's spring (from where supposedly the Virgin Mary drew her water), and the Church of the Annunciation(celebrating Mary's visit to her cousin Elizabeth while she was pregnant with St. John the Baptist).
All are well worth seeing (although there are many numerous steps and slopes to walk to reach the Church of the Visitation.)

A different vibe from the stone walls of Jerusalem. We pretty much had a good exercise here starting from the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist all the way up to the Church of the Visitation. Also had a good respite cooling down in a popular ice cream parlor here. .

Having knee problems, I did not think I can manage the steps up to the church but the charm of this place lures one and without knowing it, we found ourselves at the beautiful Church of the Visitation. The gardens, the lush green valley below, and the church on top are all so picturesque. Inside the church, fine murals including one showing our Virgin Mary and Elizabeth together provide a peaceful place for quiet prayer.
Definitely one of my favorites. What's more, going down are warm and cozy coffee shops and even an ice cream place!

Came here early morning for Holy Mass and fell in love with the place with light streaming in the windows. The murals behind the altar and all around the sides are simply gorgeous and easily conducive to prayer and reflection. The small garden outside the entrance perfectly compliments the beauty of the interior. And just outside the front gate, the view of the valley below helps me picture the journey Our Lady made to get to this lovely region. You will love this place.

On our fourth full day in the Holy Land, our tour guide took all forty-nine of us to Ein Karem. We visited two churches there. One of them was in the valley. It was the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. This is where St. John the Baptist’s birth is commemorated. The Church of the Visitation is on a hill. This is where Elizabeth’s lived for five month in seclusion. The hill is steep. Be sure you wear comfortable shoes when going up the hill to visit the Church of the Visitation.
