Overall Sri Lanka seemed like a poor man's version of India. The poverty wasn't as bad, but the sights weren't as good. Only go there if you want to relax by the pool or ocean.

It is big square at the time of britishersand known as a Independence Memorial Hall and it is national monument in Sri Lanka built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka.It has very wide roads running traffic of city.good place to visit.

Amazing atmosphere. Can relax, walk, play cards, chat, have soul searching conversations,soak in the architecture of the Square, watch the sunset....one hindrance is the guards who need to be trained better and the cultural ministry certainly needs to have better guidelines about what visitors can/cannot...More

There is no known market as such held at the independence square but close to it at the old race course grounds there is the 'good market' held every Saturday from about 09-17hrs.

You are talking about Colombo Municipal Council building known as (CMC).This is still still functioning office.
