While I was rather disappointed by Kampong Ayer, the Water Village itself, I found its about 10 years old Cultural Center quite interesting, giving all kind of information in English on its long history, on its economy, its social life and its handicraft. There is also a viewing tower attached to it. It is open daily except on Fridays and there is no entrance fee. its location is next to the Jetty 1.

A bit of history

If you are interested to know a bit more about the history of Kampong Ayer and about the life of inhabitants, you can visit this information center. You can also go to the tower and have a view over the village from above. It is a free access.

The small Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery is an ideal place to start any walking tour of the Water Village. Here you will come to understand the incredible history, the lives of the people and the changes which have made Kampong Ayer what it is today. A Must See.

I appreciate the effort. I visited around 1 pm and was the only person in there. It has some interesting artifacts and photos showing the history of Brunei.

Surprised at just how interesting this gallery was.

It cots just one Brunei Dollar to cross by taxi boat from the mainland to the gallery in the Kampong Ayer (water village). The centre is very interesting with good displays on the origin and history of the Kampong including archaeological input. This is the worlds largest settlement on stilts, with a long an varied history. The gallery is well placed for exploration to the old and modern parts of the Kampong.

History of Kampong Ayer

Nothing much to see because the gallery is small. There are some antiques on display. Went there at noon & the counter to buy souvenirs are closed. Kids love the boat ride going there & playing the congkak traditional game.

I wanted to go here, but it closes at 5pm and not open on the weekends. Really? Well, it saved me money I guess, because by the time I was able to go here, I was ready to just get out of the country.

Otherwise its a visit to a dying place. Place is done well for what it covers. Could provide simple map of the village, but there appear to be no businesses open anymore.
