the town's main market
Dec 2019
Being in Bandar Seri Begawan on a weekend I happened to see the town's all three 'tamu' (market). After dinner Saturday evening at the 'Tamu Selera', which is exclusively a food market with cooked meals (open daily from 5 -pm to midnight) I then went next morning, on a Sunday, to the town's main market, the Tamu Kianggeh, named after the small nearby river of that name.

It is a good place to see what is on offer in the country, from vegetables, fruit to meat and fish. Some sell cooked food to be eaten there. Also some other items are for sale, for example basketry, which would be an item for tourists, but tourists are hardly ever seen in this town.

From here I walked to the main street, the Jalan Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin, where a 24h weekend market is held, from 6pm on Saturday till 6pm on Sunday. Here the accent is less on food than clothes, shoes and all kind of other items.

Of all the three places the most atmospheric is definitely the night market 'Tamu Selera'.

Loved It!
Oct 2019
An authentic market full of local vendors selling products meant for residents. Isn't that what we want to see when we travel??

Visited in the morning and bought several things -- gigantic garlic, pencils printed with the Brunei flag, and a hand woven tote bag. Went about the day sightseeing and couldn't get the market out of my mind. So, went back in the afternoon and bought several more things, including a wooden stick that turns into soap/shampoo when you cut up and soak the bark. I don't know about you, but finding and learning about things that are so different from my home culture is what I love about traveling.

Very Cheap and Fresh
Sep 2019
Tamu Kianggeh located on the banks of Kianggeh River is one of the main attraction place in Brunei. This unique market created an opportunity and helped the local Bruneians to sell their own products. Many of the handicrafts sold at here are not available in the conventional shopping mall. Tamu Kianggeh has numerous things for sale from vegetables, exotic fruits, local herbs, potted plants, dried food to freshly cooked food. For visitors who wish to savor the delicacies of Bruneian cuisine, Tamu Kianggeh is the best place to start.

Interesting only for locals
Jun 2019 • Solo
There is nothing interesting for tourists. If you need something, it is better to buy in a supermarket.

The Old Had Appeal
May 2019 • Solo
Until recently the old Market which was near where todays market stands was an old ramshackle range of buildings that drew locals and tourists alike. As a photographer of peoples and cultures is was an opening into a bygone era.
The new market which is a concrete structure fulfills its purpose but has lost its "old world" appeal. Will however always be a fabulous place for seeing what fresh food is available.
