We had a very short time in Kathmandu so we booked a half-day tour with Makalu Adventures. I can honestly say that our guide Tulsi was great. He used to be a school principal and teacher and had a vast knowledge about the city.
We started off going to Swyambhunath Temple, which was really interesting. It's a bit of a climb (365 steps), but not too strenuous and the view of the city from the top is breathtaking, you really get a feel for how big the city is. After that we went to see the Living Goddess and then we walked around Patan, this was my favourite part of the tour and I'm glad we had a guide there since Tulsi knew exactly where to walk between the buildings and houses to reach beautiful courtyards and markets.
We also visited Patan Durbar Square which is beautiful and then Boudhanath Stupa. Unfortunately the spire was badly damaged during the earthquake and they had to remove it, but we still had a great time there. We had dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the stupa, watching the sunset and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
We also did a different tour with Prem Panta from Landmark Discovery Treks. We hiked around Nagarkot, saw Changu Narayan and a local festival in Bhaktapur. I would recommend this tour as well.
It's sad to see the earthquake damage everywhere but there are still so many beautiful things to see, it's definitely worth it.
If you have time I would recommend also spending a few days in the mountains. The scenery from the plane looked absolutely stunning and I think the mountains and the people are the best parts of Nepal.
I hope you have a great trip!
