I visited Meroe on a day trip from Khartoum. This is the most popular tourist site in Sudan. There is no need to take a guide as information is available in visitor centre together with souvenirs! You can walk to the pyramids or pay extra...More

Absolutely amazing site, the setting makes it wonderful, drifting sand dunes around the pyramids, peaceful, makes you feel like an explorer.

I found Khartoum and the area north to Shendi and Meroe very safe and the people very welcoming. There are unresolved conflicts in provinces to the south and in Darfur to the west however.
