Good area for a nice nature walk
A good nature area with many options for trail walking. Not as scenic as similar trails on Madeira or Crete but good for those who prefer something simple, some nice views and lots of bird life. Low amount of bugs or stinging plants, trails were well marked. Go here on a rainy day and don't forget to bring coffee!

Breathtaking Beauty Beyond Imagination - Gorges Viewpoint
The Gorges Viewpoint truly lives up to its name, offering an unparalleled perspective of nature's grandeur. As I stood on the precipice, gazing down into the deep, rugged chasms below, I was filled with an overwhelming sense of awe and wonder. The layered rock formations carved by the passage of time were a testament to the Earth's intricate artistry, and I couldn't help but marvel at the forces that had shaped this breathtaking landscape. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, an avid photographer, or simply seeking a moment of respite, the Gorges Viewpoint is an absolute must-visit. It's a place that reminds us of the Earth's raw power and exquisite elegance, and it's bound to leave an indelible mark on anyone fortunate enough to witness its majesty. I wholeheartedly recommend this destination to anyone seeking an unforgettable encounter with the wonders of our world.

    Lovely day out!
We did the Machabee viewpoint walk starting from the Petrin visitor centre. We had a hire car so parked up in the visitor centre car park (there is plenty of parking and toilets available). We spoke to the man at the entrance who pointed us towards the map. The various walks are very well signed so you really don’t need a guide! The signage shows the difficulty level, distance and time and they are all colour coded. We originally intended to do the machabee loop but we arrived a bit later than anticipated so opted for the shorter machabee viewpoint. The viewpoint consists of a kiosk overlooking the view where we sat for a snack and some water. We didn’t see many people on our walk, there were a few people at the viewpoint but it wasn’t busy at all. The walk itself was not particularly exciting (mostly flat dirt tracks) and the views were not great along the way. The end viewpoint was nice but you get arguably better views from the Gorge viewpoint which you can access by car. We later did the Le Morne Brabant hike and if you don’t have time to do them both, I would 100% recommend that hike over this - the views from Le Morne are spectacular! After our walk we then drove to the Gorge viewpoint and the waterfall viewpoint which are both along the same road further down from the Petrin visitor centre. The Gorge viewpoint is definitely worth a visit!

    Definitely a place worth visiting
If you are into hiking, you can dpend more days in this amazing national park. Well, we are not that much, so we spent only a few hours here, visited some of the viewpoints, waterfalls and walked a bit around. Nut only from what we saw, this place is breathtaking, beautiful views, amazing birds and if you are lucky enough some close interaction with monkeys. We were lucky enough, or actually they were smart enough to steal all my fruits so after that they were all around us for an hour. An experience for a lifetime!

Great hiking from Petrin @ Black River Gorge National Park
Our group of friends went for a hike on a Saturday morning from the Petrin entrance. We hiked the 4.3 km hike (8.6km there and back) to the Maccabee view point. The park offers clean toilets, safe parking and an informative visitors’ centre. The trails are in good condition, are well maintained, with clear signage, refuse bins, picnic spots and benches. The views across the natural forests of the Black River Gorge National Park are panoramic. Take water, a hat & sunscreen. Ideal for a great hike in nature.

We came here during an island tour from a cruise ship in port for the day. We walked through quite a lot of memento sellers to get to an absolutely breathtaking view of the valley! It is a must-stop location for a reason!

After a short walk from the parking lot you reach a view point over the gorge. The entire valley is spread out with the natural amazing forest, the big waterfall and endless skies.
And just to complete the settings there is a family of monkeys living in the trees

Using a local guide, and having come ready with walking boots, we had a fabulous trek visiting 7 waterfalls. We had a cooling swim in one, lovely. Not crowded but some folks were ‘self guiding’ and not wearing good footwear so they struggled in the steep, slippery slopes.
Probably a 3 hr trek, including our swim. Fantastic day. The local guide, Govind Tanos , was superb as he knew the plants, the best routes and how to get the most out of the walk.
