Completed in 1958 (architect Morisset), this cathedral is dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jezus. Our Lady of Victories is one of the many titles of Mary, perhaps selected, because the church also serves as a memorial to the Basotho men who lost their lives during WWII as part of the allied forces fighting fascism.

I visited on a Sunday when a service was ongoing. The cathedral was packed with people. All of them well-dressed (mostly in black) singing hymns (in Sesotho language) in a kind of structured, repetitive rhythm. The higher voices of the women complemented by the lower bass sounds of the men. It sounded harmonious and respectful, clearly bringing people together.

I went to view this church which sits on a traffic circle at one end of town. The church, unlike most Catholic churches, was firmly locked. I took a picture of the outside (which is quite nice) and was yelled at by a guard that made a sudden appearance out of nowhere. "Who said you could take a picture of our national heritage?" He ranted for several minutes in a menacing fashion before I could escape. Visitors beware.

Beautiful Cathedral in Maseru City Centre. The opening hours seem to be different depending on the day but you will be happy if you make the effort and visit.
