Chapungu Sculpture Park is a bit off the beaten track, but is well worth a visit. Take time to chat to the artists themselves - not only are they incredible stoneworkers, but they are incredible storytellers, bringing each of their artworks alive with the inspiration behind them.

In our recent visit to Harare and few friends had separately recommended us to visit Chapungu sculpture park. We had been to the Yorkshire sculpture park on a few occasions this was something else. Met up with some of the 2nd and 3rd generation sculptures and taken around the cooperative area and also into the main body of the estate. Rory and his wife also gave us an excellent greeting and explanation of the history of the sculptures and the masters past and present. It is fantastic how a "lump" of stone can be made into beautiful works of art. The stone textures been used with such skills. loved it so much we had a second visit during our week.

The Doon Estate is delightful. From women entrepreneurs manning everything from recycled art store, to finally a one stop place where a tourist can get postcards. To the WOVEN showroom, of African basketry, which is really high quality work. Moving to Chapungu, within the same campus is like a garden stroll and then bumping into the sculptor. Shona sculpture is something worth seeing. A curious yet amazing mix of human, animal and spirit and the stone goes from hard to soft. A wonderful intro at this gallery. The artist displaying his or her work is usually friendly and open to chatting. The opposite of the snob shy artist. Keep a few hours, carry a light snack and call ahead if going on the half day Saturday. It is a good half hour from Harare, but absolutely worth it.

Visited this place with minimal expectations. Some excellent traditional and contemporary sculptures in parklands and a building that is being regenerated by owner Roy Guthrie. A great opportunity to watch and talk with the sculptors while they're working. Seems to be a reemerging calling. Nicely priced.

Chapungu Sculpture Park was closed because it has been vandalized and is getting renovated. Instead, go a short ways down the street to Doon Estate, where there is an extensive outdoor sculpture gallery with carvers working. Also an indoor gallery where you can purchase sculptures, Brian who worked there was awesome. There are also two shops with various goods from local and international artists, in addition to an art gallery (mostly paintings). It was free to enter, there is a guy selling food just outside the entrance if you are hungry. I got there via kombi, so you do not need a car. Just ask to be dropped at Chipungu and walk a short ways down the street from the main road.

A must see artsitic attraction, the Chapungu Sculpture Park is in Msasa town a 20 minute drive from the city centre. It displays the work of Zimbabwean stone sculptors. It was founded in 1970 by Roy Guthrie, who was instrumental in promoting the work of its sculptors worldwide.

We were so lucky to meet Roy Guthrie during our visit to the Park and to learn about the artists and his work to help the artists and the Art. The Park is quite extensive with a variety of work and great for presents, some Art Pieces are just incredible. Many stones are used to make the sculptures and some are very colorful and beautiful.
We bought two pieces and had lunch at the Little Eataly Restaurant right by the Park, very nice and relax.

At Chapungu there is a variety of gifts one can choose from and buy for your respected friends and guests. The place is well known for supplying well polished artefacts in Zimbabwe and abroad. The prices range from $5.00 to around $2 000.00 depending on individual tests.

We enjoyed walking around the Sculpture Park, but also took the opportunity to do some birding at the same time.
