There are a couple of kiosks with information, too, but that's about it. From the reviews I read, it is what I expected to see, but I still had to visit since my 3rd g-grandfather died there as a Confederate prisoner-of-war in 1863. I don't...More

There is a small wall of the prison thats left. Some how they forgot to preserve history. On the side of the wall there is billboard types of information interesting. Tells you who was jailed here. I have pictures of all that was there.

not much left to see. The historical story is very interesting but there isn't much left to see. It's a shame that the city of Alton didn't do more to restore such a landmark

I saw this as part of a tour. It was interesting and there is a lot of signage which tells the story of the land and the prison.

Silly me, I actually thought there would be a building there after reading some of the TA reviews. It is very interesting to read the info boards, but there is no building.

I've been here many times and I guess it's because I like history. There really isn't to much to it besides a piece of wall and some bricks. There's s plaque with some history on it though and when I'm there I try to imagine...More

Alton has TONS of civil war history but it's also a great place to find some haunted history too. This place is the best of both worlds since it was the old site of a Confederate prison where hundreds of soldiers were taken prisoners and...More

This site will not take long to see but definitely provides a glimpse into Alton's part in the Civil War. Any history buff will get enjoyment out of this site.
