About
Have a refreshing swim in the pool under these scenic falls in north Oahu. You can get there via an easy 1.5-mile hike through a beautifully landscaped path along the Waimea River. While the park is beautiful year-round, you may encounter a dry waterfall during periods with little rainfall. Tickets are required to enter the Waimea Waterfall and include the rental of a life jacket, which you must wear to take a dip in the pool. Beware of the slippery rocks. If you need a refreshment—and to complete the experience—have a quintessential shave ice on your way back.

You need at least 2 hours to take your time to explore the garden fully. Once inside the garden its a 30 minute uphill walk to the garden. It may a bit challenging for some. However you can pay and ride the golf cart instead of walking. However if you can walk, walk it so you can take your time. Take your bathing suit just in case you are able to swim in the waterfall. You will get lots of great pictures. Nice spots in the garden for a picnic. I will definitely go back.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 October 2023
- Shante JSan Francisco, California43 contributionsAmazing walk and scenery of lush nature along the wayAmazing for self guided tour. We rented a car for the day and drove here. The walk/hike to the falls is paved and has amazing scenery and historic content of the Hawaiian culture along the way. It’s only about a 2 mile walk to the falls and taking a dip in the water is refreshing. Worth the drive and absolutely beautifulVisited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 March 2024
- Ava BHouston, Texas14 contributionsDo This! This was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. You have to do it. There is a $25 fee per person but it is worth it. The water is a little chilly at first but you acclimate. The current is strong the closer you get to the waterfall so you will have to exert some effort to get up to it, but do it as it is a blast. The walk to the waterfall is a beautiful botanical garden. Have your camera ready. Note: getting into the pool area to swim up to the waterfall you will need to navigate rocks, don't do the waterfall part if you are unsteady on your feet. I saw many elderly enjoying the walk up to the falls but not venturing in because of the challenge of getting into the water. It is not that difficult for an average fit person, (truly not that strenuous) but not if you can't climb on loose rock and navigate small boulders as you enter the water. Wear water shoes and be aware that the rocks in the water have algae on them and are slippery. Have fun!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 June 2024
- VALERIE B5 contributionsScenery beautiful, Falls not so muchThe Waimea Falls had lots of opportunities. They are beautiful but the “swimming” is in a small area with tons of people. It is like swimming in an Olympic size pool with 200 of your closest friends. The walk up to the falls is beautiful. The flowers and vegetation are breathtaking. But if you’re going for the swimming don’t waste your time.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 June 2024
- Ray H9 contributionsWaimea Falls ExperienceThis place was phenomenal. First off it cost $25 a person to enter the area and The hike wasn’t really a hike but more of a gentle relaxing stroll all the way to the end where the waterfall is. Along the walk, there were many pockets where people can walk around and just explore the nature around. So many plants to see and read about. The waterfall was amazing, once you get to the waterfall, if you want to get in the water, they provide you a life jacket which is mandatory (no extra cost) and then you can enjoy swimming as long as you want. Now for those who do not wish to get into the water and would rather enjoy the view, there is a bench where people can sit and watch. So if you are in Hawaii and want to experience that Hawaii waterfall along with an easy walk, I suggest Waimea Falls. Lastly, there is a trolly for those who really don’t want to walk or can’t and I believe it is $10 a person to ride and there is parking in the area.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 September 2024

The trail is well kept. There are side trails to see more plant life, which was nice. We went late morning (around 10:45) and it seemed to get more crowded as the day went on. The waterfall was beautiful when we went. My parents walked the whole way there and back. They are in their mid 70s and in decent shape. It was tiring for them but they made it! The botanical gardens and scenery are beautiful! Highly recommend.

The botanical garden and walk is lovely and beautiful but $25 per adult to walk to a tiny waterfall cascading down a rock into a brown pool of water was not worth it at all. $10 a person would suffice but $50 for the 2 of us was a sham. Sorry, the property is lovely and the gardens impressive but the waterfall is not impressive and the price is far too high.

It was raining off and on the day we were here but a definite must see. My family even went swimming at the waterfall. They give you life jackets before you go into the water. For those who are unable to walk to the falls, they do have a shuttle that will take you up near the falls so the walk is minimal. There is a separate fee for the shuttle but highly recommend if you medical issues.

A friend and I saw this waterfall as part of a circle the island tour. It was about a 3/4 mile hike from the bus stop to the falls. The waterfall is very beautiful. People are able to swim there, but life preservers are required as the water is deep under the falls. Many people choose to swim, so the wait to get a preserver may take a while. The hike on the way back is very beautiful. The flora and fauna are incredible.

Our trip to Waimea Valley was nothing short of amazing! The highlight was the stunning waterfall, though the water was a bit murky, but rest assured—it’s safe for swimming. Be prepared for a deep and tricky entry, but there’s a lifeguard on duty and life jackets provided for safety. One tip: bring cash, as they don’t accept electronic payments. At the entrance, you’ll find a restaurant and a great gift shop with local treasures.
The walk to the waterfall takes about 20 minutes, but if you’d prefer, there’s a shuttle for $10 each way.
Personally, I enjoyed the walk, and along the way, you’ll come across local crafts and trails that offer even more to explore if you have time. It’s a wonderful blend of nature and culture!

Thé valley walk up to the falls is a beautiful botanical garden, well maintained and marked. The trail is paved and easily walked. Cultural displays along the way add to the ambiance and to the experience.
Thé falls had many people enjoying the float in the pool, complete with life guards and required life jackets given out at the site of the falls.

Is the waterfall closed Mondays? The website says it is, but the ticket purchasing section of the site allows me to select Mondays.

Is there a trolley or shuttle service that goes to Waimea waterfalls
Written 20 November 2019
Yes there’s a golf cart. We had a lovely commentary from our driver as well. We walked back though and it really wasn’t far.
Written 3 December 2019
Is there a general admission and parking fee? Is it a nice easy hike?
Written 24 February 2019
There is an admission charge for tourists and local residents ( local residents ID required). The hike is relatively easy as they are paved pathways. You will require to wear a safety vest if you want to swim in the fall.

We arrived yesterday (Aug 12) at Waimea Falls about 2pm and were told the falls were closed due to an accident. Everyone was extremely vague about when the falls would be open again. Does anyone have more info? Thx!
Written 13 August 2018
Yes it is. The kids had fun swimming. They make all swimmers use swim vests. They have a placard that cautions people about risk of leptospirosis but there is a rinse area and changing room anyone can use. There’s still a lot of people going and enjoying the waterfalls.
