Overview
More
Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is the place to go to enjoy Belize butterflies and learn about them in the process. Green Hills literally has thousands of live butterflies on display in a 4,000 square feet walk-in flight area. The guided tour in the butterfly flight area and the Blue Morpho Breeding Center takes about an hour. The facilities are surrounded by a botanical garden with more than 150 labeled plants, shrubs and trees. These gardens are home to dozens of hummingbirds, and the average visitor can easily see eight or even more species while visiting the Butterfly Ranch. Green Hills is worth a stop on your way to or from other popular destinations such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Barton Creek, Caracol or the nearby villages of San Antonio and El Progresso. We open at 7 am and close at 4 pm. Late tours are welcome but only after reservation.

After a long trip by car over treacherous and at some places very bad roads we arrived at the farm, but it is closed PERMANENTLY. So save yourself the difficult trip! (And nobody at our hotel knew it was closed....)

This place closed in October and has no stated reopening date. I am not sure why, but check before you go. I only gave it a 3 rating because it is closed. It may be great or not if it ever reopens.

We drove a half hour on a bad road to get there. Fortunately we met a local that told us their last tour was at 12pm otherwise we would have done the rough drive for nothing. All the guidebooks say they go till the 3...More

You have to time your arrival with the hatching of the butterflies. The population goes down before the eggs hatch. We did get to see some beautiful butterflies including the Postman (my fav) and the Blue Morpho (son's fav).

It was a bit of an afterthought to be honest but we were VERY glad that we went. My youngest son helped one butterfly that was floundering a little on the ground and it jumped on my sons arm for the remaining time we were...More

We didn't plan on going here, but are so thankful we did. We ended up at the ranch around 8:30 am in June/off season. We were the only ones there. The tours are only open from 8-12 and costs $25BZD per person. That price gets...More

A little bit out of the way and difficult to get to. A cab from San Ignacio cost us $50 usd for the return trip. Our timing wasn't very good and the Owner was a bit angry about that, luckily the husband saved our day...More

This is a special place, almost magical to one who really didn't know much about butterflies before visiting. Our main objective was bird watching but we were highly encouraged by the owners to take their tour. We were so glad we did. Days later, we're...More
