About
The iconic Catalina Casino epitomizes everything glamorous about Santa Catalina Island. On the lower level the building features extraordinary Art Deco murals and a classic 1929 pipe organ inside the Avalon Theatre, which still shows movies on its massive screen. The top level of this 12 story high architectural wonder features the beautiful, world-famous Casino Ballroom, a masterpiece of design and a long-standing venue for the world’s best musical performers and big bands. It is also a popular venue for weddings and special events. The only access to the building is through an exclusive Casino Tour offered through Discovery Tours. Once on the tour you’ll soon understand why many call this the most romantic place in Catalina.

We were visiting Catalina Island for 2 days and this was one of our scheduled tours. It was within walking distance from our hotel and it lasted for about an hour and a bit more. This was one of the most interesting things we did on our 2 week vacation. Very well organized and a lot of history was shared.

We took the tour of the Casino and found it very interesting from many aspects: historical, arts and culture and architectural. We'd certainly recommend this tour for any first-time visitor.

The building was definitely stunning, but Frankie's lack of COVID precautions and blatant sexism/homophobia completely ruined our experience. At various points during the tour, he:
- claimed he has a worm living in his body that prevents him from catching coronavirus
- bragged about dancing with girls as young as 3 years old on the ballroom floor, claiming girls are "born knowing how to dance". This was in response to a mother refusing to allow her young daughter to dance with him in a demonstration
- told us about his wife's drinking habits
- reflected upon the good old days when women dressed up "like women"
- made a joke about not dancing with men because he's Italian (??)

The tour with any other guide might be worth it because the casino was beautiful, but we found it hard to focus on anything other than Frankie's bizarre unsolicited opinions. If the casino is the only obsolete piece of history you're interested in, avoid Frankie at all costs.

You can’t stay in Avalon and not go on the Casino tour. Step back in time to one of the most beautifully painted theaters and the magnificent ballroom that can hold 6000 people , while learning about the history of this marvelous structure and the town. And the views from the 360 degree balcony of the harbor and the town are amazing! One of the most beautiful performance spaces I’ve seen anywhere in the world. It is the crown jewel of the town, the iconic structure that defines the harbor and absolutley not to be missed.

Great iconic building in Avalon.
Although not generally open to the public inside without a tour, the exterior itself is amazing!
Tile entrance and architecture of the Building are definitely worth visiting.
The building was never a gambling casino though.

The Architectural Highlight of the Island. Historically significant and artistically fascinating. I visit it every time I'm on the island.

I just wanted to walk in and take some photos but they want me to take a tour and I didn't want to. I think it sucks that that place is so greedy.

So glad we booked this tour. Frankie from Avalon was an excellent tour guide. A beautiful building with good history. The theater was amazing as was the ball room. Not something kids would enjoy necessarily but worth the time.
