- WayneTokoroa, New Zealand462 contributionsA very nice memorial despite the sadnessThe memorial is a well thought out tribute. Sad to see over 58,000 names had to go on this. Plenty of walking space here. Nice to see people have put flowers and photos here upon their visitsVisited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 November 2023
- montanapescadoAlbuquerque, New Mexico1,472 contributionsBrilliant in its simplicityWhen I first heard what design had been selected for this memorial, I thought it grossly inartistic and unworthy of what was to be memorialized. When I saw it in person , I realized how wrong I was. This is utterly compelling and a must stop for DC visitors.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 March 2024
- I WLeicestershire, United Kingdom352 contributionsAwesome memorialDesigned as a slash / gash that heals from the middle, so the names are in order from the centre to the right, and then from the left to the centre, so the first people killed in action or next to the last. We went to see the memorial twice, during the day and at night. SeemedVisited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 June 2024

The nighttime tour of the monuments made it difficult to fully realize the magnitude of this wall. But as I walked past, the names continued on. The layout of the wall is pretty neat as it rises out of the ground and then fades back into the ground, almost as if to signify the rise and fall of veterans in our country; the never ending need for their sacrifice, and the significant size of sacrifices that have been made.

Always a moving and somber memorial to visit. It is quite lovely and serene. Everyone is so respectful when visiting. It always brings tears to my eyes to see the items left behind for those lost souls. Vietnam Vets were treated so poorly upon their return that it is a testament to their resilience when you see so many visiting the memorial and finding the names of those buddies they lost. It is an honor to be able to thank them and pay your respects. A must see in DC.

On a recent visit to DC, I visited almost all of the monuments and memorials with a couple of friends. I hadn't been to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial before. It's certainly worth a visit (as are all of the monuments/memorials), but, completed in 1982, it's one of the simpler memorials. The largest portion of the memorial is the Memorial Wall, which is made of two black granite walls on which the names of servicemen who fought in the Vietnam War and were declared dead (though not necessarily killed in action) or are still "missing in action" are etched. There is also a bronze statue ("The Three Servicemen") and a women's memorial at the site. While we were there, we saw an NPS employee or volunteer rubbing graphite on paper over a section of the Memorial Wall to make an impression (presumably of a family member or friend's name). It's well worth a visit if you're visiting the monuments/memorials!

Vietnam Veterans Memorial, designed by a very young Maya Lin, is my favorite and most sacred space in DC. Right near the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.
A place of profound sadness and loss. I love the way that the names retain the moisture in the night and the water burns off in the morning sun. The honorees' names come to life. Please honor our war dead and visit.

This memorial is a tribute to those who paid the ultimate price. I highly recommend taking the time to stop in and look for any names of the fallen either in the app or on the hard copy books and then go find them on the wall to pay your respects. It’s also close to the Lincoln memorial, reflecting pool and Korean memorial.

I found this memorial very appropriate to commemorate those who fought this great war. All names are included on a very long wall, and lots of quality statues to symbolize the important moments and lifestyle of those in Vietnam. Definitely worth spending a solid moment here in DC to remember.

The veterans coming home from this "War" were not welcomed home as they should have been and we as a nation should still be ashamed of the action of those who were so very hateful and disrespectful. Today when I see a Vietnam War Veteran, I approach them with a smile on my face, hand out to shake, I say "Welcome Home, Thank You for Your Services." WWII Veterans I approach the same way, Thanking them for their services. It was an honor for me to pay my respect to these amazing men and women who gave their lives to fight for freedom.

A beautiful and impactful tribute to all those that were lost.e to use guide book to find name of a relative that drowned in 1968, 9 weeks after being drafted. We know nothing else of his demise. A personal touch to a life lost. I never met the man and not too many are left that knew him. I was glad to pay person respects to him and his sacrifice.

This is an important memorial for those involved in the Vietnam/American war. The design of the black granite memorial is very interesting. They have a couple of books there that you can look up to find family members involved in the war. There was also a veteran present who you could talk to if you wished.

A little like walking into a trench... well designed tribute to those who died in this awful war. If you know anyone who perished, it is important to find their names to pay honor. The polished stones are so reflective and capture the light of the sky and greens of the trees. It is a restful place.

Can you bring your dog here by the wall?
Written 23 September 2018
Yes. We saw dogs all around in the open areas of the mall.

Hi,
How long do you recommend you allow for a visit?
Thanks

If you are just looking at this one memorial it will not take more than 20-30 minutes. However the memorials are all very close and in walking distance.

A 91 yr old vet friend would like me to be his escort on an honor flight. I am an 80 yr old woman ( not a vet). What would be the requirements for me to do this?
Written 9 August 2015
I think your vet friend needs to fill out an application at the honor flight website. I believe the guardians/escorts are volunteers or staff members of honor flight and anyone accompanying the veteran would have to pay for their own flight...

There are lots of local hotels, no doubt, very expensive as you can imagine, being the capital. Most, if not all people usually drive in, park up and walk. But if your not to worried about cost, look in this app, it will give you a list of hotels. But to save money, find one a little further out, your cost will almost half.

hello everyone,
I'm doing a reserach on the vietnam veteran wall
unfortunately I can't go there
And I have a question:
I read in an article that you start the tour from the center and end it in the center
how is that possible ?
could someone plz tell me about the circulation in the memorial ?
thank you

My dad's name is on The Wall. The names that start in the middle on the right hand side with those first lost in 1959 and goes in chronological order down the length of the same side. The chronology then continues at the small end of the left hand side of The Wall until it ends in 1975. The designer wanted the beginning and the end to meet representing the full circle of the War. It doesn't matter where you start or end on the Wall unless chronological order helps you locate a particular name you are looking for. There is a database to look up a name but in the military many are known best by their "call signs" or nicknames so the database with official names doesn't help but following the chronology does.
