    Friday Morning Tour
This tour was much more than my partner and I had expected! You do need to schedule a timeslot online to enter, but the tour is self guided and free. You can enter the research library which is still active and the architecture is amazing. They also have Thomas Jeffersons Personal Library which is very cool!

Gorgeous and impressive! Go at lunchtime if possible.
We found that the place really thinned out around lunchtime. It is a gorgeous place to visit. The women in the family seemed to enjoy this much more than the men. It had a timed entry but we arrived an hour early and got in with no problems. There is an overlook into the reading room, so even if it is not open to the public, you can see it. I loved all the beautiful ceilings. You'll spend less than one hour. Then go next door to see the Supreme Court. After that you can eat lunch at Union Station down the street, or visit the Capitol Visitor's Center (but I suggest you get a tour through your State Representative's office to avoid the lines).

    Absolutely Stunning
Visited the Library of Congress with my parents during a multi city break along the east coast of America, I can recommend going in the morning before it gets busy and being one of the first to enter I managed to get some lovely photos of the inside without any encroaching fellow tourists! Unfortunately we couldn’t go into the main reading room but we were able to view it from above and there are still a few other interesting things to see on your visit. All in all the visit wasn’t overly long, about an hour, but it really is worth a visit as the building itself and inside architecture is beautiful and at the end of the day it’s free to visit, you just need to reserve a timed entry pass online.

The Library of Congress is a national treasure
Visiting the LOC was a long awaited dream for this library nerd. The LOC has 3 main buildings so accessing the right bldg for our assigned entry time was a bit confusing. Reservations for timed entry are required. The architecture in the Jefferson Bldg is stunning & the exhibits were very interesting (Gutenberg Bible, Gershwin, Photos, Jefferson's library). Visitors can look down into the Main Reading Room but need a library card to enter & use it. If I only lived closer....! I was able to visit the Veterans History Project & thank Mrs. Donna Borden for her enthusiasm & expertise.

    Amazing library
The great hall is gorgeous, but you can't to get in. The whole building looked very nice. It's free, but you need book a timed entry pass on their website. The tour is self guided. We visited there on a Wednesday late afternoon, it wasn't crowed.

    Unexpected Surprise
The Library of Congress was an unexpected surprise. The areas open to the public are stunning. Whereas the multitudes of books aren't visible, it was interesting learning from the volunteers how the LoC works and where everything is stored. And fortunately for us, we happened to be there on a day where the main reading room was open to the public. No lines, no quick in-and-out visits. We walked in, talked to some of the volunteers, and sat at one of the study tables and took in the grandeur and history of that room. (Logistically speaking, visiting the LoC is convenient to lump with the Capitol and Supreme Court.)

    Fabulous find for our family.
Had to select a visit date, but haven't actually been there in decades. But we discovered a family treasure in these walls. The library contains a 776-page book of my family geneology published in 1940 with my family history documented back to 1303, over 1000 years, in Switzerland. I recently purchased the last five copies from the publisher for handing down to family members.

    Truly impressed
A must visit. We have booked this tour in advance and it was free. We first went to visit the Capitol Hill and after visiting Capitol Hill you can easily reach the library through an underground passage. The building of the library is truly spectacular. In the library you can see for example Thomas Jefferson’s books and the Gutenberg Bible. We were truly impressed.

    Beautiful
Washington DC truly have some of the most amazing buildings. You must reserve your free time slot and visit. You will not regret walking around and soaking up how beautiful the architecture is. The building is truly stunning. Words and pictures don’t do enough, you need to see it with your own eyes.

    Quick, interesting hit
Took my 9yo. She enjoyed the trip. She thought Jefferson’s library was very cool. We had timed tickets but arrived 30 minutes early and were allowed in. Gave my kid a scavenger hunt to do while looking around, which she loved.

This winter holiday, I am not traveling overseas. So I am trying to take every opportunity to observe holiday festivities in DC. The Library of Congress was one of them and I had a wonderful tour given by Gerald, a dear alma mater friend who works there. It had a gorgeous Xmas tree decorated with books dedicated to 50 states. I found my kids’ birth states and mine. ☺️ The Library was built after the Capitol was in a fire in 1814 and it lost everything. Thomas Jefferson sold over 7 thousand books for about $23 thousand dollars to help start a library to provide sources and information for legislators primarily, which is now the Library of Congress. There is an exhibit of TJ’s original books and replicas and a grand room dedicated to scholars in mosaics; I enjoyed it immensely!

I was so glad to visit this on our reccent trip to DC because I did not have a chance to visit on my previous DC trip. This is the world's largest library (it does not have every single book in the world, but it does have bunches of books and also has a lot of recording too I am told). Anyone 16 years or older can get a library card and check out a book. The building itself inside and out is just spectacular and gorgeous. The library is actually several buildings but the main library is in the Jefferson Building and that's where you want to visit unless you're going to do research. Right now they are requiring timed entry passes which you can get online for free. The only time I could get was 10:45am (opening time) on Tuesday, and we had a Capitol tour scheduled an hour later. It was a short walk from there to the Capitol so we figured we had about 45 minutes for our visit and that turned out to be enough. The big items we saw were the Guttenburg Bible and Thomas Jefferson's Library (which he donated to Congress to begin the library). Not all of Jefferson's Library was viewable as some books were not there due to them digitizing the entire library. The view of the great reading room is just breathtaking. While you can definitely spend more than an hour here, if you are pressed for time, you can get it done in less than an hour for sure.

There are so many attention-getting museums and buildings that vie for our attention when visiting Washington DC. Who has time for a library? Well, get that notion of what you think a library is all about before your cross the threshold of this truly spectacular representation of art, science, law, poetry, engineering, technology. It's just beyond words. They say there is more gold in the walls, murals and paintings than the rest of the city combined. It was the first building to have electricity and until 1940, it was the premier home of all knowledge about America.
I was able to go on a private tour but they have public ones that are worth it. Take the time to learn about the paintings, marble statutes and take some time to get yourself a library card! All you need is a current passport or driver's license and you too can look at the books in the stacks. No, we can't check anything out. I'm posting some photos from the tour. Some of the spaces were on the private tour, like the card catalog and the Senate reading room.

We went here in January, so it was pretty cold out and there weren't a ton of people. The exhibits were great and we really enjoyed the Women's Suffrage exhibit. You can't actually go into the library portion but you can view it from the top. It's a free stop and the best place to start your day in DC. There's a tunnel connecting the Library of Congress to the Capitol building, which will save you time since you won't need to go through security a second time. With the colder weather, it was really nice to do this. We spent about about an hour and a half here, skipping only one main exhibit.

This is just an awesome building, there is so much art here its impossible to see it all. I was impressed about how they could have every square inch covered with art and it still didn't seem to clash at all. If you have the time you can spend hours in there as I said every square inch are covered from floor to sealing. You can take pictures in there no flash. It may not be the best place for very small children but young teenagers will be fine. If you want to see the library you have to check and find a day where there is no research that are the only days you can go in there.

I was looking for something to do after our work obligations for myself and a few coworkers and because the Library of Congress is open Thursday evenings until 8 pm, this was chosen. I had NO idea when I picked this (because it was free and open) that is was going to be so grand! It was also raining so we stayed longer than planned, opting not to go explore the monuments of the National Mall in the rain.

We reserved our free tickets online, some of us reserved them just a couple hours prior. We arrived, went through security and realized we were more in a museum than a library. The feel of the architecture and arches, marble, columns and intricately decorated spaces was breath taking. We went into several of the reading rooms and while we were more browsing everything, some of my coworkers did opt to get library passes which are good for two years and allow for certain benefits. If you plan to return more than once, I recommend getting the card.

I have been impressed by the NY Public Library, and this is on that level of architectural quality. This being the largest library in the world, housing some very unique collections certainly holds them all significantly. It feels huge, and creates the feeling of awe.

I do have a blog where I write about visiting in more detail, giving tips and traveling tricks for DC and itinerary building help. My link is in my bio if you are planning a trip there soon and want more information. I appreciate affordable stops and high-quality experiences! After we did walk to Mr. Henry's for dinner and it was a short walk through a lovely area.

The Library of Congress is not just a building with books! it is a work of art, and has terrific exhibits to just amaze you. Take a guided tour, the guides are a wealth of know, and make the art murals come alive wit their messages. it is a spectacularly beautiful building too. Just helps make history, learning, and books and media come alive! Good for the whole family.

Most impressive is certainly the building itself. Opulent staircases and decorations throughout the building. If you are only a tourist - the main library hall (is to be seen from a glassed window on the top level). You may have to queue for it. Several highly interesting exhibitions (e.g. Rosa Parks currently) throughout the building including one of a few Gutenberg Bibles. Personally, I also enjoyed the artifacts and maps documenting the early conquest of Mexico by the Conquistadors. I would highly recommend a visit, even if you don't otherwise care about libraries and focus more in Instagram snapshots.

You can access the library from an underground tunnel connected to the Capitol building. This will mean you avoid a walk In the snow or rain. The library is lavishly decorated with beautiful mosaic floors and stunning ceilings covered in paintings. The reading room Itself is highly decorated and a quiet haven for reading. There are very interesting exhibitions on to see. Worth a visit.

This extremely beautiful building can easily compete with some of Europe's treasures.
Although not as spacious as many places, the marble, the carvings, the ceilings, the deep wood contrast is exquisite. You can view the same books that Jefferson held and read, a unique representation of Rosa Parks, early colonization, one of only a few copies of the Guttenberg Bible printed on vellum, and more. It really is one of DC's must see.
