Overview
More
On the skyline of the pretty Moorish town of Tavira stands a strange construction. A cylindrical form on spindly legs with what appears to be a single eye that slowly turns to observe the town, it's presence like that of an alien spaceship from War of the Worlds. The cylinder however contains a delightful camera obscura, and in the cool darkened space it's revolving lens projects telescopic images of the town below onto a large concave screen. The commentator tells you that from ground level you cannot be seen as you observe the comings and goings of the street below. What fun then, when walking through the town, you become aware of the eye turning to face you and you face it, smile and wave at the surprised tourists inside. Please note that the last show is performed 30 minutes before the closing time so we kindly recommend to arrive before 4:30 pm Monday to Friday or 12:30 pm Saturday and Sunday. Thank you.

We have been to Tavira 5 or 6 times and had not seen this unusual attraction . It was recommended by another visitor staying at our hotel. It is fascinating and well worth the entry price. Our guide was extremely informative and gave us lots...More

First, this is just super cool to see how an old water tower was converted to a large camera obscura, and a low-tech, old school one that is operated with ropes and counter-weights. From the very top of the city, you see a real-time view/reflection...More

A hidden gem in an old water tower. Get a different view of Tavira in real time. Worth the climb up the hill

Great experience! You think you're watching a DVD rather than a live view of the city. And the history is fascinating. Well worth a visit.

When you hear Tavira has a camera obscura in an old water tower - so many possible stories go through your mind. Unfortunately none were told to us at this attraction....and when we asked, it seemed like understanding this wasn't necessary. This attraction could be...More

Interesting bird's-eye view of Tavira. Lift takes you up to the top of the converted water tower. Friendly guides.

We visited the Camera Obscura (in a converted water tower) and it was really interesting and a unique experience. We had a very knowledgeable guide who explained the lense and mirror system which enables the viewing of the entire town. Really enjoyed it. It’s only...More

I'm fascinated by the camera Obscura! Saw one in Lisbon, now here in Tavira. Everyone should experience it. Better than a land tour!
