Viru Gates were built in the 14thC, and the towers still standing today are only a part of the original structure. Viru Gates are located in the eastern section of the town wall. The main tower of the gates was built in its initial form in 1345-1355. Today, Viru Gates are one of the entrances into the Old Town leading to numerous shops and restaurants in Viru Street.

Like most medieval cities, Old Town Tallinn was surrounded by protective walls and towers. Luckily, large sections of Tallinn's walls and towers are still standing and are very beautiful. Some of the most impressive are these at the Viru Gates and nearby side streets.

There are several gates through which the Old Town can be entered. Viru Gates are located on Viru Street leading from Viru Hotel to Town Hall Square. They are part of the defense system of Tallinn city wall built in the 14th century.

From the center to to Viru hotel - this is the place where you find many shops, also shopping center near the hotel. In Xmas time it was nicely decorated.

A really nice place to go to when visiting Tallinn is the Old Town. When going through the gates you can feel the history winds.

The most beautiful entrance to Tallinn Old Town, and if you visit in December, they are lit for the festive season in a very considerate way to their environment

From the first sight as you approach the walled city, to a closer examination upon arrival these are a perfect welcome to a lovely historic town. Looks Lovely lit up for the festivities.

These grand gate towers were a taste of the delights that awaited us in the Old Town. They were part of an elaborate barbican that was constructed as a segment of the town's defensive wall in the early 15th century.

We stumbled upon these by accident, though we planned to come the next day. But, they're close to the rest of the sights/sites you probably want to see, and they're super cool to imagine being the gates to the city. Close by is a wall...More

These are a beautiful historic attraction but you won't need to spend much time here. There are some shops around and places to sit and eat but that's it.
