Cieszyn or Český Těšín
May 2018 • Friends
Cieszyn (Polish) and Český Těšín (Czech) its a small and cute city. There is a bridge and it connects Poland and Czechia. If you are close, or on your way, be sure to visit.

Nostalgia for Habsburg Austria
Jun 2017 • Solo
Pictures of Kaiser Franz Joseph of Habsburg in my guesthouse. Austrian kuchen in the bakery. Nick name: Little Vienna. Where does this nostalgia for the Habsburgs come from?

I understood that until 1918 Cieszyn was part of Habsburg Austria. During these times Teschen was a small multi-ethnic, multi-cultural city ruled from Vienna. In 1920 the city was divided between Poland and Czechoslovakia. During WOII historic buildings in the city were hardly damaged, but the population suffered immensely from Nazi rule. Almost all Jewish inhabitants (over 6% of the population) were murdered. After 1945 the large German minority fled or was expelled. Polish people from the areas annexed by the Soviet Union moved in. At the surface at least a more homogeneous Polish population exists in the city of just 36,000 until today. Habsburg Austria is far away in Cieszyn's history. Was it dissatisfaction with communism and the lingering of anti-Nazi German sentiment that brought about this romanticism about the Habsburgs? A longing for being part of 'civilized' Central Europe?

Worth seeing
Aug 2016 • Couples
Lovely atmosphere. Interesting architecture. The "Venecia" area is particularly quaint with absolutely charming gift shop and gallery there. Lovely windy narrow streets and you get to walk over to the Czech Republic as an additional bonus. Perfect for a coffee and stroll afternoon

Surprising discovery
Jul 2016 • Couples
There are only few towns in Poland with it's old town not touched by the destruction of 2WW. Cieszyn was our totally surprised discovery. So charming, with so many beautiful spots, Absolutely picturesque market square and beautiful cobbled streets.

Very nice old town
Jun 2016 • Friends
If you travel nearby Cieszyn make a stop and enjoy the Old town. It is very nice place with several historical buildings, there is a possibility to have a coffee or a beer in one of the cafes.... It is also nice to cross the river and visit the Czech side of the town which is relatively very new compared to the Polish part. What I liked a lot was that the entire city was very clean, mostly well maintained and nice to look at.

Not extraordinary
Dec 2015
We crossed the border from Cesky Tesin and walked to PKS station. After flat relief of Czech part Polish part is hilly and winding. So it is not a good idea to walk all way down if you have luggage. Better to get bus or cab when you cross the bridge and enter Poland. It is no delays to cross the border, no border control. Cieszyn itself is nice town. Some buildings is interesting.
