Spectacular hike of moderate level. My six year old made it most of the way to the ladders. Some parts are nerve-wracking for those with a fear of heights even before you get to the ladders, but a well-marked trail with amazing views. The weather is unpredictable and one day we experienced strong gales making us glad we were not on the trail that day. The wildflowers were blooming in early December and the orange-breasted rockjumper was a great sight and one for our bird list.

Even if you don't make it to the chain ladders and the top of the escarpment even walking a portion of the hike is a great outing.

Its around 14km for the return trip. The chain ladders are a test of your fear of heights. The route is clearly marked. It is best to stay at Witsieshoek and then drive your car to the start of the hike.

The chain ladders on the sentinel peak hike comprise of 2 sets of ladders. At the time of writing this review, the bottom right hand chain ladder was out of service, so only the left hand ladder could be used to climb up or down to the amphitheatre. The views from the top are breathtaking, making it worth while to conquer the chain ladders.

The ladders are scarry and steep, but the view makes them worth the climb, and if you`re in to climbing I guess they are easy. For non-frequent hikers it`s a thrill.

My son convinced us to hike the amphitheater hike after having run mont aux sources. What an amazing view and the hike was fantastic. They have really made the paths tidy and easy to manage. I had to really dig deep to do the chain ladder as I don’t do heights well but managed with lots of encouragement and so worth it. We came back down the gully - very tricky and rocky but a fun challenge. One of my best days out highly recommend it but you must be reasonably fit as the air is thin on top.

It's safe. No matter what your brain tells you, you can do it. Just stare right in front of you and don't look up or down or around you. And maybe watch some YouTube videos before of people with fear of heights managing to climb chain ladders. That inspired me :)

It is not very physically demanding hike, of course you have to be fit. The biggest problem is a fear of heights, if you afraid, don’t go cuz there are some exposed areas and chain ladders. Trail is not very well market especially after the ladders. Also the road to the Sentinel car park (the start of the hike) is really rough, better take a tour from the Backpackers lodge or transport from the lodge near by. Views are fantastic but weather changing a lot and some parts of the trail can be dangerous. If you are not familiar with the terrain, it is better to take a guide. If I had time only for one hike in the Drakensberg mountains, this trail would definitely be that one.

I once read that this is one of the ten best hikes in the world. Agreed! Admittedly this was my 4th time up. The previous times, it terrified me so much that I either couldn’t complete it or wanted to get back down as soon as I was up because of the thought of coming back down the dreaded ladders.
This time, having hiked a great deal more and a lot more competent in hiking in general, I hired a guide and went up. I can’t describe how spectacular this hike was! There are parts where the path isn’t very clear or disappears for a few meters/ you have to scramble across a bit but it is certainly more clearly marked than a few years ago. They have made an effort. The altitude and pictures you’ll be able to get is unparalleled considering that this can be done as a mere day hike. It took us around 5 hours and the GPS said 14km after coming back via the gully. I’m going to be on a high for a very long time after this. And the pictures are irreplaceable! I recommend getting a guide or porter from Witsieshoek mountain lodge just 7km from the start of the hike if you aren’t already spending the night at the resort. They’re very knowledgable and are able to help over tricky terrain as well as offer good advice for the ladders if you loose your head a bit.
It’s going to be very hard to outdo the pictures that I was able to get on this hike.
