My family traveled the Rhine Valley by train / KD boats in May 2008. After reading all the great reviews of Burg Eltz, I knew it was a must-see on our visit. Burg Eltz is a beautiful castle and well-worth a visit. However, if you...More

A lot of the castles in the Rhineland were built by petty elites to exact tolls from passers by. Burg-Eltz still engages in this regional past-time - only with unsuspecting tourists. The castle is run as a scam. Here is how it works. You show...More

We took the train from Trier and then hiked to Burg Eltz; it was over an hour's hike, well worth it if you enjoy hiking. The Burg has been in the same family for over 30 generations. You have to go through with a tour,...More

We went on a cold rainy day, so booked a taxi from the train station. Glad we did. We encountered a seasoned female solo traveler who said the hike was more difficult than anticipated and path not well marked. Castle unique in that it has...More

Initially, we were going to skip this but we're so glad that we went. This is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe and fairly easy to get to. If you're on a quick time line, take the train to Moselkern and grab a...More

We were on a Mosel cycling trip and stopped in on Burg Eltz along the way. This is an absolute must do, and the short hike makes it particularly magical. The hiking trail to the castle starts about 2 km from the town of Moselkern...More

I visited Neuschwanstein Castle many years ago, but whereas that was a 19th Century folly of Ludwig II, Burg Eltz is the real deal in terms of age and purpose. When I first saw this in a photograph on a friend' s Facebook page I...More

We visited Burg Eltz this past week, in early October. We went on a Friday. We did not have a car and were told the only way to get there was to take the bus to Moselkern and walk to it. I think it was...More

We visited using public transport. The train trip from Koblenz was spectacular. The walking track from Moselkern station was not well marked, so luckily for us a kind, local lady driving past picked all 4 of us up and drove us to the carpark. From...More

As others have noted, it's unusual to find a castle in a valley but that's where you'll find Burg Eltz. It's still owned by the original family and has been very well-maintained. I agree that €2 to park, €4 for the 2-way shuttle, and €10...More

I have visited several times. I have always taken the path along Eltz creek, the last time all the way from the rail station in Moselkern. This approach brings you to the castle at its very base, with a long stair climb to the castle,...More

Drive your car up the Mosel river towards Koblenz. Set your GPS for Burg Eltz so you don't miss the turn from the main highway. Then you have about a 5 mile drive over country roads to reach the parking lot.
